The Mojave MA-201FET is a transistor microphone from the inventor of the legendary Royer ribbon microphones.
My first impression: The case is in standard quality and nothing special ... but does its purpose! The spider with the unique locking mechanism is great and intelligent. The micro itself comes in simple black therefore and does not offer a single feature --- speak no pad, low cut etc.
The test: My application is limited to musicals .... The first notes with my voice sounded very nice and almost like a tube character! Especially much to me, that S or Zischlaute as well as not at all to the weight! I was impressed!
The only criticism: with very loud singing passages one has the feeling that the dynamics catching is very "tight" acts .... but this can depend on voice to voice and on the own sound presentation.
Conclusion: I have sent the micro again returns, because it just did not cover the dynamics for my musical range, what I wanted.
For all other my advice: Ordered and tested itself, because this micro is actually much too cheap for such an expensive sound!
The Mojave MA-201fet is a large diaphragm microphone in transistor technology with FET circuitry that does not require any jazz. Pad switch, lowcut and the like one searches in vain, the characteristic is limited to a (in my opinion relatively wide and nicely open) kidney.
I have never really missed any features. The MA-201 has enough headroom and an excellent sensitivity that could distort capsule at the most if you placed it right in front of the beater in the kick. And since every semi-decent preamp and most interfaces have pad and / or lowcut, this also poses no problem in an emergency.
What counts is the sound - and the convincing with audible but unobtrusive character! The Mojave sounds modern, but at the same time "old school" and above all: really good. Warm, voluminous basses, powerful midrange and absolutely smooth highs ensure a balanced, natural, powerful and transparent sound.
Meanwhile, I own two MA-201, which - although not a "matched pair" - always ensure a convincing and realistic stereo image. Thanks to super-fast transients especially recommended on the drumset, eg as overheads (fantastic sound as an ORTF pair about 90cm above the snare), room microphones or outside the kick. But the Mojave also delivers a convincing result even before the acoustic guitar, the guitar or even the bassamp.
The MA-201 also scores as a vocal or speech microphone with an excellent basic sound, which - if at all necessary - is well tolerated by EQing. A de-esser will not be needed in most cases thanks to the good transient reproduction. However, you should pay close attention to the voices and be careful with the placement, as some bassier voices through the fat basses of the Mojave at too small a distance and frontal discussion very quickly become a bit too thick "down rum" and sound somewhat compressed. Better to let something air - especially in the case of fidgeting singers, the pays off, especially since the kidney of the Mojave remains synonymous with a great distance nicely focused.
The bottom line is a very good-sounding microphone without a frills, which can safely be called a studio all-rounder and is in every recording situation at home. Its strengths are especially when it comes to something rockier to the point. In a good space, the Mojave can deliver this "3D effect", which is only found in higher price categories.
The only criticism and therefore a star trigger in the processing: The spider, although great designed, can not quite convince. The thread is not cut optimally, the safe turning the microphone sometimes gets something to the fumbling. No real obstacle, but many manufacturers can do better in the lower price segment.
