Martin Guitars 000-28EC

Steel String GuitarThe company Martin has existed for over a century and in the field of acoustic guitars it also stands for an absolute classic. There are probably few deserved guitarists who didn't for some time (or permanently) played a Martin.

A gentleman, who is normally famous for its incredible feeling on the Stratocaster, gave a MTV concert at the beginning of the 90's with acoustic instruments and thus incidentally triggered the Unplugged boom. The man in question is Eric Clapton, of course. He knows what is good and has always loved to play Martins - only logical that he has his own signature model. The top made of solid sitka spruce, the back and sides made of east Indian rosewood, the neck made of solid mahogany and the bridge made of solid ebony - with that ingredients the instrument must indeed be sounding good and may cost a bit more.

Superb instrument, but not for me.
Drummond, 19.04.2015
This is a beautiful guitar, exquisitely made with the most wonderful rich sweet rosewood smell, and supplied in Martins quality and very robust Glieb plywood case. (Only one key supplied for the case, and no tool for the truss rod ....... which I gather is standard practice for Martin).

I don't know which strings were fitted, but most probably Martins own brand phosphor bronze Clapton light gauge.
In contrast to the rest of the strings which were well balanced, the E 6th was a little dead, and although the guitar has a truly wonderful tone with good sustain and a bell like clarity of sound, I found it distinctly lacking in volume when played fingerstyle with nails. For plectrum strumming though, not a problem.
Along with this lack of volume, I found the guitar rather too solidly built and a little heavy.

My main criticism of this model though was the neck profile. Width at the nut was fine at 1 3/4", but the low profile combined with the "Clapton modified V" shape I found extremely awkward and difficult to play, in spite of the action being set very low.

I don't have big hands but I found there just wasn't enough "meat" on the neck to give me purchase for a lot of finger positions, and I found the only way I could play it comfortably was to tightly fold a piece of tissue paper to line the inside grip of my left hand between thumb and index finger........ So it had to go back!

In its place, I chose the Martin OM-42, and this is gorgeous, everything the 000-28EC isn't. ....same body shape but physically lighter and a lot more reactive, not as orange in colour, still low profile neck with 1 3/4" nut, but a much nicer hand fit for me without the "modified V".
This guitar has astounding sustain (eg. the E 6th 12th harmonic rings loudly for 15 seconds, and audible for longer!), with plenty of fingerstyle volume. The tone is similar to the 000-28EC, but fuller/rounder with a lot more of it, and the whole guitar resonates against your body and feels truly alive.
I'll review this guitar separately soon, too busy enjoying it at the moment.

The 000-28EC is a superb instrument, no mistake about it, and it will suit a lot of different players and styles, particularly strummers and plectrum pickers, but not at all ideal for me.
