Comparison Marleaux Tonwerk bass preamp with the Golden Age mic preamps: Premier PREQ-73 / Project PRE-73 MKIII for my semi-acoustic bass guitar.
I first ordered a Golden Age Project PRE-73 MKIII because I wanted to connect it to a HiFi system. I was not satisfied because of the noise that already appeared with gain and output volume both just over half way (I practice in an extremely noise free studio).
For comparison I ordered a Golden Age Premier PREQ-73 and on advice from Thomann a Marleaux Tonwerk bass preamp. The noise level of the Premier was lower then the MKIII, just good enough, though certainly not noise-free at higher volumes/gain. The sound was a bit smoother than the MKIII, also less deformation, but that is just a matter of taste. It was a rich, heavy and lively sound (because of the harmonics), only the highs lacked a bit sustain. The EQ part however had some annoying - I think - grounding problems.
The Marleaux worked really well and easy in sound shaping the two elements of my safran semi acoustic bass (piezo and magnetic elements). Also I could adjust the sound 'by ear' whilst playing, very easy. Just to stand out in the mix, or to give it a totally different character. It is a little less lively and thick in sound than the GAP's. On the other hand, it sounds silky-sweet in combination with the piano and no problems with noise and statics. The Marleaux just gives a different sound compared to the Golden Age - it is not a matter of better or worse. When playing very high notes the Marleaux definitely had more sustain.
It has enough gain for my bass and the input trim lights are handy because this preamp is not designed to distort, but to give a precise and detailed reproduction of the bass sound.
It is built sturdy and has a smart switch off system when you unplug the guitar cable. Don't leave it in, because it will drain your battery.
Because of my use of the EQ whilst playing, this disqualified the GAP EQ for me. So I kept the Marleaux Tonwerk.

Tonwerk, Great EQ
jackkafe, 25.03.2019
I have to say that, at first, I was a bit sceptical about my choice. Lots of similar products, not a cheap pedal, no drive option, couldn't find enough information from a user that owns one.
But after I plugged it in, clouds disappeared. I can now get an enhanced and detailed signal from my PJ Jazz MIJ Bass, the eq knobs are responding to every little change, and everyone in my band was surprised at the rehearsal.
Careful though, you're not gonna take a "dirty" sound out of it. No "space-sounds" dreams either.
Buy it only if you really want to have a great, clean, excellent sound. If you're dealing with frequencies that cannot be heard at studios and live gigs, the Tonwerk is the solution. Then you can add any other pedal into your chain. If you really need driven sounds etc, all from one pedal, then don't go for it.
I would also like an FX-Loop option, that would be great, but I guess I'll have to deal without it.
I personally love its sound, gave me solutions to my EQ problems and I think I'm gonna keep it for years (I hope it will last).
Thanks Marleaux (and Thomann for the excellent and responsive services) .
