Line 6 Amplifi FX100

14.10.2014
I own several Line 6 products: the Pocket Pod, the Pod 2.0 & Floorboard and now the FX100. If the Pocket Pod is all about portability and the Pod 2.0 + Floorboard all about flexibility and on the fly tweaking abilities, the FX100 sits right in the middle ? easy and fast to setup, one not to large piece of gear, with still some degree of fast, on the fly, tweaking abilities. But this is not all it as to offer. The fact it can be completely controlled via bluetooth with an ios app that can connect to Line6 tone library and search and download tones in less than few seconds is really a nice feature. Because not all of us have the abilities or the time to replicate the tones we love!

Features: 8/10 ? Although some of the features aren?t very practical in a rehearsal or gig environment, especially the ones that depend upon the ios app, the FX100 as a lot of features. To name only a few:

Onboard - 100 presets in 25 banks (all editable); 2 in 1 volume and expression/wah pedal; Drive, Bass, Mid, Treble, FX level or speed (mainly), Reverb , Tap Tempo/Tuner, Master Volume and Mix volume (since you can stream music or backing tracks via ios app to the FX100, the Mix volume allows you to adjust the guitar volume in the mix). You also have various connection options: amp (mono), L/R main outputs and headphones.

Via ios app: Tone deep editing, tone library, search and download from Line6 online tone library, save tones to hardware, share your tones by uploading them to Line6 online library, stream music through FX100, etc. In terms of tone editing, you get a ton of diferent, most famous, amps, cabs, compressor pedals, OD pedals, fuzz pedals, distortion pedals, modulation pedals, delay pedals, reverb, etc, etc, etc... you need to be a hell of a guitar player this is not enough for you!

In terms of features, I miss the ability to change amps and FX?s through onboard knobs. And also the ability to turn on/off certain ?blocks? of signal chain through onboard switches. Both were possible in the Pod 2.0 + Floorboard... Also, I?m not entirely sure, but I think the Android market is still wainting for their app.

Sound: 9/10 ? It sounds very good! It doesn?t have the HD processing capacities of other, more expensive, products but the sound is really good. To tell you the truth, if you close your yes, you will not be able to spot if you are listening to a tube amp or the FX100 through good monitors!

Quality: 8/10 ? Very well constructed and finished. But you need to be careful with your feet hiting the knobs, they will probably brake if you hit them hard.

Handling: 8/10 ? Overall it?s easy to use but sometimes it gets difficult to change banks as you need to hit two switches at the same time to go up or down. The ability to edit the presets using the onboard knobs is usefull although, as already mentioned, it would be nice to have an amp knob and an FX knob.

Looks: 8/10 ? Not that it really matters in a floor piece of gear but it?s not hard to look at.

Overall: 8/10 ? Puting all together, it could be better in a few ways, but still you get a load of features and tone possibilities in a fairly small, easy to use and affordable unit. Unless you are a super rock star, you should give it a go!

So easy to use, open the app, search for a song and boom! I have the tone for that song. I had searched the internet locally for the best deals for this and the cheapest i could find it was £175 + postage from a uk retailer. Then i decided i buy everything else from Thomann why not try there, low and behold £152, since i had a bunch of other gear i wanted i decided to place a large order. This was done on a saturday, and i had the gear in my hands on the wednesday morning, cannot ask for better than that, plus with an extended warranty as with all equipment from thomann!

The usability is fantastic, the tone match features and amp make it so easy to get the right tone my 3 year old could do it! This has now replaced my spider valve 1x12 and fbv shortboard completely, which is good for someone of advancing years!

All in i couldn't recommend this product more, and the only way i will contemplate changing it is if the hype about the firebird effect proves to be true...

on a budget, or in a wedding band, this is perfect, and used through a p/a i struggle to hear the difference between this and the valve amps it is said to emulate.
