Great tube-mic!
Slim, 17.11.2015
The first impression, when taking it out of the box was impressive. The looks of the mic are outstanding. When you put it before the singer and the tube shines through the front? nobody yet have kept a comment to himself/herself. It's looks are so impressive that everybody thinks that it must be something really good. But is it as good as it looks?

The first comparisons and tests in the studio were with guitar amp. Just because the first session after the purchase happened to be that kind. As I am also a guitarist, these sounds are most familiar to me and I tend to notice the small nuances. The mic worked excellent for that application. The mic took away harshness from close miking that most condenser-mics tend to pick up. The LCT840 smoothed these harshnesses out, I was very satisfied with the purchase already.

The vocals sound really smooth and round. Some singers that have recorded in my studio before, noticed the change already in their headphones - rich, sensitive and round. These are all pseudo words for describing audio. But how can you describe something that you don't see? The good use is from added microphone cover. I use it when I want vocalist to be closer to mic, the ordinary pop-filter would not allow it and the pop-filter somehow harasses singers, gets in the way for close-mic singing. But that mountable cover on the microphone head makes it more natural and almost invisible.

Since it has switchable polar patterns it adds even more versatility. I've used it on almost everything - trumpet, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica, drum room, upright piano... I have no cons to say really. It certainly does not hold back any creativity or performance. And don't forget the shiny looks!

Clean, but dull
pamik, 01.08.2017
To me, this is a one-dimensional microphone which adds a lot of unnecessary weight on the voice. The overall sound is clean, but deadened. It's scooped out of essential frequencies which makes cutting through the mix a hard task. Nevertheless, I appreciate the quality of manufacture for this microphone, as well as its pleasant, but lacking excitement sound.
