Are Laney sandbagging this amplifier?

Gain_Badger, 30.05.2015
Every other 6v6 tubed amplifier is around 15 watts with a Fender oddball running 22. 10 watts + 10" speaker is a little too convenient. Maybe they don't want it to eat into sales of the 12?
Anyway, a simple to operate amp with real drive behind it, belying the 10 watt claim.
Darker and much cleaner in tone than an el84 equipped amp, it evokes many Fender and 70's classic rock tones. It doesn't really do bright and chime, but it does do very good cleans through classic rock and really sings with smoky, smokin' blues.
Through an external 1x12" and it shows the limitations of the stock HH speaker, which while not bad, is nothing special. Not worth replacing it though as terms such as 'muffled','woffly' or 'harsh' don't apply. It is still a stock 10" in what is after all a small cab.
Loud is a term through the cab. As is controlled, driven, ballsy and present. This is a very 'present', touch sensitive amplifier and it is a pleasure to stand in front of it and make my guitar make some very nice sounds indeed.
Control wise, there is a ( pre-amp ) gain, a ( master ) volume and a tone control which Laney say is more a 'light and dark' control. On/off, hi-lo inputs and a power indicator complete the sparse panel. You don't need more.
At the moment, I'm mostly playing poppy/grungey/ska-punk with plenty of 70's type classic rock noodlings thrown in. It copes very well with crunched cleans. Sometimes, I smooth it out with some jazzy inspired lines and a roll off of the volume and tones on the guitar means I'm there in a second. Very versatile and responsive.
It doesn't do \m/ metal and neither do I. Any attempt at a modern metal tone is met with amp disdain. Whilst it takes pedals well up to a point, this is one I'd advise metallers to avoid. Everyone else, dig in and enjoy.

Great sounding amp for the price

Tigas666, 04.01.2018
From home practice to rehearsal with a full band it does the job. Note that if you love playing loud, like I do, a speaker change is suggested, not that I can find any faults with the original speaker in regards for sound, but a more powerful one gets louder. Many have sworn by the eminence legend 1058 and the jensen C10R as good pairings with this amp.

The amp has been described as dark sounding, but to me it sounds really good, fender-ish, and I have no complaints about pedals being put in front so far. Try it with a good sounding fuzz, crank it up, and then some.

I couldn't find any faults whatsoever in the amps finish and features, everything looks very secure and very well balanced and put together.

If you play live often, and you don't want to haul your bigger sounding and more powerful amp to gigs in small venues, I'd recommend this as the way to go, if you're into that fender-ish tube tone, which in my opinion can only get better with distortions / overdrives and such. On the other hand, if you thrive the most in getting your sound from more powerful amps, or play in a heavy band that requires that push, you should probably look for something else. For punk, blues, noise rock, etc. its a suitable amp. Change your speaker to a more powerful one, and you'll make yourself and your drummer happier. Mic it up, and boom. Get 2 and a stereo reverb, and you're in dreamland.
