Lots of light and some shade

11.01.2017
Preliminary remark1
I would not have thought of it when I decided to buy on 21.12.16, but it actually came in spite of the Christmas struggling still on 24.12.16 with me!

Preliminary remark2
The ForteSE is to replace with me the PC3 with 76 Kompromisstastaur, which also drives the Kronos61 over it.

Conclusion:
Light:
- Very good keyboard with 88 weighted keys
- Stable instrument with relatively low weight
- Partially very good sounds, fully editable
- Absolute controller-free assignment
- good value for money

Shadow:
- small display
- only 10 Favorites
- Editor not up to date
- missing compare function for multi-edit

Now to the Forte SE in detail:
It makes a quite stable impression and is for me with both arms well to grab 124.2 cm and weight 18.5 for me just still acceptable. Despite the bottom bevelled at the back, it is firmly on the keyboard stand, but I can not push the rubber ring of the stand arm so far forward that it also supports the floor plate.

I get along very well with the somewhat heavier weighted hammer keyboard. Finally, I can not only play the pianosounds of the SE differentiated; And, especially, the Kronos wings, as I have already been prophesied in the Kronosthread, sound quite different than before. Oh, what have I played there last year? And 88 keys, wonderful. The keys are well damped, there is nothing clattering, as I often experienced with other devices.

First I had to update the OS. It was still the old one. The update went smoothly. In the meantime, we were well advised to extend the sound stock. Why then not even more more sounds of the PC3 were implemented, I do not know. So, thanks to the help from the forum via the editor you can load more sounds into the user benches ..
So far, there are the factorybanks A and B, as well as the user banks A - D. That means, first press the program, then on the display select the bank with keys or dial, press Ok; And only then can you press the category in the bank and select the program in the NUMBER field underneath. A little cumbersome.
One is well advised, if one later with Setups Sounds by Category to choose, these to save the 16 corresponding storage places of the banks by category, and not simply for example from # 1420 the strings. If you really want 160 or more stringsounds there, but with 4 user banks is already somewhat difficult, not to say impossible.
For the organization of the sounds, the editor is very helpful, which in this area even funtioniert and for the compared to small display somewhat compensates.

You can take your own PC3 sounds with import naturally also? A tool for this would be helpful, especially since you do not just get into the editor. The editor is also useful for the multis. Unfortunately, it is actually only designed for 4 zones, as it was before the ForteSE update. However, if you set up 8 zones on the device and import the multi, you can then edit 8 zones. The editor then also displays all the sounds of a category, not just those of a bank. That helps very much. For me, the combined functionality with editor and on the device itself has proven itself. Soundtower has promised to upgrade the editor according to the NAMM-

It is sensible to create a basic multi-zone with 8 zones as a starting template (template) for the others. The Forte SE has also the mad controller assignments of Kurzweil, which I greatly appreciate, but they must be mastered (in the advanced mode).
Pedals, switches, faders, really everything is freely assignable.
Even if you take the ClearMulti as the starting point, the first 4 zones are "clear", otherwise there are controller assignments with the other sliders, buttons etc., which one must first remove. Only if, for example, the function ZoneMute is assigned to buttons 5 - 8, the zones 5? 8 to turn on and off, which is then signaled by the green LED, for other functions, it lights up red. The unique intensive setup of such a multis will therefore pay off very much later.

The switching of multis is not always quite noiseless, but I am clear.
What I miss is the Compare function when editing Multis, with Programs go there over the Fav2 button.
10 Favorites are of course not enough, since there is no more QickAccessMode. In the meantime, it has been suggested that future improvements can be made.

To the sounds themselves: I like them and have it now synonymous already used in the PC3 and I have now even more choice. In the Pianosounds, Kronos (but only on the SE keyboard!) Had the nose ahead. But I could not try everything. My favorite Pianosound from PC3 sounds, imported into the SE, but much better.
With the KB3 sounds, I am also only after imports (so) satisfied.
And you can now change everything and adjust!
Since the assessment of sounds depends on your personal needs and preferences, you can only recommend the self-listening. The same is true for the keyboard, but not only I judged as very good playable.

Pro keyboard with very many possibilities

06.03.2017
Use the SE mainly as a live keyboard. Little use as a combination DAW / Sequencer / Synth.
Used as a piano, e-piano, organ, synth (surfaces, leads, solo instruments) and above all as a multi-instrument: layers, splits, arpeggios. Over 8 zones. Not only 2 or 3. (With the big brother it is then 16!)
The control concept forces you to prepare in a positive way because all controllers can be assigned freely (push buttons, faders, pedals, wheels). Nothing is hard wired. I had to understand that. First read the manual, understand the philosophy. Then order only at Thomann. ;-)
The board makes claims to the - I emphasize - keyboarders. (The pianist has "only" 32 factory programs "place"). Otherwise, the board looks for the e-pianist, as divided into Rhodes, Wurly, Clavinet ... etc., the organist, the AnalogSynth player, etc. to the - this is the freestyle "multi-player". So somehow all at once.
Must have experienced. For the factory sounds you need months.
Positive:
Continuous improvement of the software by Kurzweil. The global community is heard. Mistakes in the tricky SW are ironed out. Great features come to it. One waits with others in vain.
Charging times a multi currently 0.5 seconds.
Community support is 1+, many professional keyboardists with massive setups. Reading / writing English is a great advantage.
Negative I see that some (still) seems untrained. There will also be new features in the future and, above all, their concepts, which will never be achieved with other highly praised boards. That's why Kurzweil calls them simply "only" pro-keyboards.
In sum therefore only for the professional / semi-profi live keyboardist.
