Tasty warmth of a true vacuum tube in a stompbox
Łukasz, 26.05.2020
I was looking for an "always-on" overdrive pedal for my double humbucker guitar. What I wanted is some additional grit and slight distortion when picking strings hard... but a rather more civilized and subdued sound when picking delicately. This unit provides all that, and more.

First of all, you need to assemble it. This has good instructions and is very easy to do. Somebody said it's like model airplanes or putting a pre-made pizza in the oven. Those are good analogies, the assembly difficulty is minimal. My only shock was that the pedal didn't turn on with the battery in. Relax, it turned out that the "true bypass" pedals need a plug connected to the INPUT to actually turn on.

Operationally, the Overdrive unit requires the rightmost knob (GAIN) to be turned up a bit. Turning it all the way down makes the unit silent regardless of the leftmost knob's (VOLUME) setting. So pretty much at all times you need to play with the two to keep the actual resulting volume at the level you want, for example if you want it to be in line with the bypass volume. This mode of operation is a bit annoying but you get used to it. Fortunately, the color is set by the two middle knobs: TONE and TUBE GAIN. The first one is a simple low-pass filter. The other one is an additional signal drive for the tube device alone. I keep it pretty much maxed out or almost maxed out at all times. It sounds fantastic. With a small caveat: the OD-S is quite noisy when VOLUME's set above 12 o'clock. The more GAIN, the more noise, too, of course. Nothing drastic but something to keep in mind.

The overdrive's main use case is the guitar, obviously. But it can be used very effectively with Moog synthesizers to fatten the sound, especially when the ladder filter's resonance is set higher. The wave shaping achieved that way is subtle enough that it doesn't register as distortion per se to the listener. This compression with a hint of overdrive and added tube warmth is fantastic. It's beautiful.

The unit accepts 9V batteries and you need to give it rather fresh ones. It stops working when the battery is below 8V. So none of that "dying battery" effect here. I use mine with a power supply, no issues there.

I have two gripes with the OD-S. The functional one is that it would be even more versatile with a wet/dry knob. Then I could really use it as an "always-on" effect. The other gripe is vain: I wish you could see the dope vacuum tube triode through the case.

All in all, highly recommended.
