Modelling is not just for guitars

Pete-plays-guitar, 12.04.2017
I was waiting in anticipation for the black version of the KingKorg. After hearing the sound banks on many videos on the internet I was sold on the keyboard.

If you are looking for the fat gorgeous pads of the 80s then this is the keyboard for you. Many waveforms to choose from and these can be infinitely edited to produce and unbelievable range of sounds. It models perfect the controls of the analogue synths and combined together with the broad range of effects there are very few analogue sounds which this synth cannot produce.

Sound wise I cannot fault it. At first I was wanting the NordA1 but after trying the two out in the shop on an A/B test, in my opinion the Korg comes out far ahead for it's range and quality of sounds available.

When Korg first released this synth in gold it was just too 'bling' for me (and obviously for many people), but in black it slots into my synth rack without shouting 'look at me'.

Also weighing next to nothing, it is easily transportable. For geekiness alone, I would have bought it for the startup sequence of lights sweeping across the the whole keyboard.

My only gripe, but not enough to lose and stars (as I have it plugged into the computer) is only 200 memory locations for storing patches, which is a little on the pokey side.

I cannot recommend this keyboard more to anyone looking for that elusive analogue keyboard sound from their teens (if they are going through a mid-life crisis like me).

Highly recommended

The best synthesizer I've ever had

Jesús C.P., 19.09.2018
Well, that: the best synthesizer I've ever had (and see what they're doing). I have had Rolands Juno 106, Yamahas DX, Korgs, Virus, Novations, Waldorfs ... and the KingKorg is the one that offers me the most brutal sound and the one I like most of all (with the Access Virus at close range). For the record, this is not based on general balance, performance, connectivity, etc .: I rely on the most important thing of a synthesizer for me, with total subjectivity: the sound, the pure and hard electronic sound .

I do not even enter into the digital / analogical question, and I am absolutely indifferent that a synth is VA, analogical, digital or that it ceases to be; simply this Korg sounds like I wanted. I went for the Deepmind 12, because the price was very tempting, but after listening to lots of demos I decided to spend a little more and buy the KingKorg. After listening to it at home, I do not regret it (and that does not detract from the Deepmind, which I love). If you are a fan of the pure and hard electronic sound, without further distinctions, without purism, without prejudice, who does not care if a sound is from the seventies or from any other decade, or that is generated analogically or digitally, then this is your synthesizer (or one of them, because for tastes colors).

PROS
The sound, obviously. Brutal and versatile and of the highest quality. From the most delicate to the most aggressive. The best for my taste are the pads.

The ease of use: if you are minimally familiar with the subtractive synthesis of all life, after 5 minutes you are radically changing the sounds quite easily, without having to read the manual.

The effects included. I'm not a purist of the vintage or the analogue itself, so I like a synth, however classic it wants to be, to bring the maximum amount of digital FX. In the case of KingKorg they help to make the sound beautiful. And the real valve is a pass.

The filters. Having all that amount of modeled filters (Moog, MS20, Oberheim, TB303, etc.) gives it a power and versatility greater than any other synthesizer that I have had or tested so far. I am indifferent to the degree of similarity of modeling to the originals, I just like the result (who, to give an example, is a fan of Moog and has a very fine ear, obviously, it is best to buy a Moog).

The quality of construction. Yes: what you just read. The KingKorg has a very good finish by today's standards. The plastic is of good quality, as well as the buttons and knobs. Definitely, I do not agree with those reviews in which it is said that the construction is bad. I expected something much worse, but I got a surprise. Obviously: it is not a tank, but it is well built and gives a feeling of quality (perfectly similar to that of a Yamaha MOXf, for example). Another thing is the keyboard, but we already know that in this type of machines the keyboards are never the best. To understand us: the keyboard is neither better nor worse than in any other synthesizer of its range.

The price. ¤ 859 for this sound and the benefits it has seems more than attractive. I understand that there are people who are willing to pay thousands of euros for other machines and respect, but, in my opinion, what KingKorg offers for that price is second to none (as I said before, I like its sound more than the Deepmind) . It seems as if this Korg has been a commercial failure: it has never stood out especially, it has never been a "hype" and the one that, after 5 years since its launch, can be obtained again for this price seems great to me. I think it was the right time to buy it, before they stop producing it. If, in fact, not many have been sold, I think we are facing a new Yamaha AN1x (the Roland JP8000 took it to fame in its time, but I think the Yamaha sounded better).

CONTRAS
The amplifier envelope and filter generator knobs are shared. Personally, I like that they are dedicated. The same with respect to the control of the LFO and other controls in general. I suppose that in some thing the price had to be noticed.

Bring joystick instead of modulation wheels and pitch bend (I do not like joysticks, I find wheels much more comfortable).

Few storage memories (only 100). In a digital synthesizer released on the market in 2013 it seems incomprehensible that there are so few memories for the sounds themselves (you only have to look at the Deepmind).

The keyboard does not have aftertouch.

In short, I recommend it totally, but my criteria are absolutely subjective.
