No one would say it's a hybrid amp, the sound is perfect, it's very versatile, it has a lot of body.

Absolutely thrilled

SlowHead, 16.09.2017
Right now - the chef Jupiter is in my opinion a fantastic amp. I have the thing now for about three months with me in the employment and am still absolutely enthusiastic. I was looking for a small top part for my Marshall MX212A Box (Celestion Seventy 80 Speaker), which makes a good figure at home in the rented apartment as well as in the pro space and on the stage.

Tube amplifiers basically have the problem that the desired end stage saturation can only be reached at a certain volume - ie the amp is, according to the performance, either oversized for the home or too quiet for the stage. Many manufacturers now solve this problem with the so-called Power-Soak, which is nothing more than a thick load resistor in which the excess power is re-applied. Koch solves this problem much more elegantly with Jupiter. Instead of an oversized power stage, the sound is produced in a weak 12AX7 tube, which is operated as a single-ended power amplifier (Class A). The signal is then scaled up to the desired power with an additional transistor output stage. Thus, the generation of sounds and amplification are decoupled. The result is really impressive. It is actually possible to produce a really nice, growling sound at a neighbor-compatible sound. The gain control determines the pre-stage distortion, the volume control determines the final saturation and with the dimmer you only adjust the desired volume - it could hardly be more straightforward and uncomplicated.

The sound itself is also an earwax. The clean channel - clearly located in the blues / jazz range - sounds soft and voluminous, but also with a lot of attack and pleasantly unobtrusive brilliance in the heights. Especially single-coil pickups harmonize very well with this amp, since their often cutting, glare sound is somewhat defused here. Humbucker guitars may sound dull. Another positive feature here is the separate gain control, which at least allows for a slight pre-amplifier in guitars with higher output. The Spring-Type reverb is digital, but sounds very organic for me. In short, hard strokes, a slight chorus effect mixes into the reverb, but this usually does not interfere.

While in most tests I've read mainly the clean channel of Jupiter was praised, I find the Overdrive channel not less impressive. Especially for low-priced amplifiers, I have often found that the sound is too low for low gain, and is only slowly useful at higher distortions. Here, Jupiter surprised me. It offers wonderful sounds throughout the entire gain range. At a very low setting, it almost still has the fullness and brilliance of the clean channel. Turning the gain control to 12 clock breaks the sound wonderfully. The amp has a very direct response and invites you to make the sound with your fingers and to regulate the degree of distortion by the hardness of the stroke. Turning on the gain will keep the sound fatter and rockier. The distortion does not sound very complex, but very harmonious. If you add a final saturation with volume and dimmer control, you can refine the sound. If you want to crash it right there is still a switchable gain boost. For mature lead sounds I would prefer a rather an effect device. The amp is not suitable for metalers anyway.

The equalizer does what it is supposed to do. Above all, the more highly centered control can be very useful when there is a lack of presence and clarity. The Contour switch has only a minor effect. I usually switched it on, because I have the impression that the sound becomes a bit more saturated - but can also be imagination. Overall, the Amp offers just the right amount of flexibility without losing its character. It is worth mentioning the possibility to connect two speakers as well as the recording output, which I really succeeded. Of course, nothing can replace a proper guitar box, but the sound of my studios is already amazing.

All in all, I am more than satisfied with the amp. Any doubt, whether a hybrid amplifier can sound right after tube were immediately dispersed. For the bids I find the price of 569 euro (as of September 2017) absolutely justifiable. Sure, there are more expensive amplifiers that have more to offer, but in its price class Jupiter is already a real statement. The workmanship is impeccable and the foot switch is included. It should also be remembered that this amp comes from European manufacture, while most of its low-priced competitors have long been established in China.
