Great bass

08.06.2016
OK, so, I'll get this bit out of the way first...

My bass arrived with some scratches on the back of the body. Some of them fairly severe. I don't know who's fault that was, Thomann or the courier, but it arrived damaged inside the box, with no damage to the box itself. I approached Thomann and they were honestly a pleasure to deal with. In this case, I came away a little disappointed as I bought the last bass in stock, so I could only be offered a refund, or compensation. The maximum compensation offer left me a little cold, but I feel Thomann did all they could to solve the issue. If they had another in stock, they would have replaced it, but, alas, the cupboard was bare. I was just unlucky.

The bass itself is a beauty. It looks great hanging on my wall. I love the head stock. It really does cast my mind back to my teenage years, lying on my bed, looking at my David Ellefson posters hanging on my wall, Countdown To Extinction in my ears.

To play, it is fairly comfortable. It's not bad, but if you want a contoured body shape that hugs, look elsewhere. If you are used to bass shapes such as Thunderbirds (et al), you'll know what I mean. It's different to your usual Fenderesque clone, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The action was a little high for me. I have adjusted this and now it feels much better. I love the neck. It feels chunky and has substance. The whole thing feels well built. The tuners are nice. I've heard that some folk plan to change the bridge on their DE Jackson Kelly Birds, but I don't really see any need to. Each to their own, of course, but the hardware is top notch.

The strings on my bass sounded a little used and dull (I'm wondering if my bass was off the shop floor, or something), but after fitting a new, shiny set of Daddario XLs (ESP170), the thing really sings. The sounds this bass produces are really impressive. The active EMGs are sweet, but very versatile. Because of this, it might take you a long time to find the perfect sound for your ears, but you will get there! The pick-up sweep function takes all of the complexity of 'dialing in' the desired ratio of neck vs bridge pick-ups. A very good idea, that.

Once you're all toned in and EQ'd up, it's a pleasure to play. It'll bring a smile to your face as you play that riff from that Megadeth album and have sound just like it did when you were listening to it on your walkman on the way to school. Bring on the Peace Sells intro...

Bad points? Apart from the cosmetic issues (which really aren't that terrible - I want to be clear that I will still use Thomann again with no hesitation), the only thing that springs to mind is the seeming lack of case availability. Also, YOU WILL NEED A GOOD STAND - NO EXCEPTIONS. Preferably one of the ones that grabs the top of the neck. Do not be tempted to lean this bass on anything in between sessions. It WILL fall over and a good, firm whack on the headstock in the sweet spot WILL take it right off and you WILL be gutted.

To surmise, I love this bass, but I understand that its not everyone's cup o' tea. It looks like its just for metal, but it's surprisingly versatile. The EMGs are the business. At this price, nothing comes close.
