Ibanez GRG7221 7 String

Johan A, 14.01.2014
I bought this guitar to find out if 7 strings was the thing for me or not. I wanted something cheap to start out with but still get a decent playing guitar. Several of my friends own Gio series 6 string guitars and they have all proven to be a terrific bang for the buck and based on this I decided on the IBANEZ GRG7221.

So what do you get? Well, first of all a very nice neck, slim, satin finish on the back and very nice fretwork. No sharp fret ends, frets well seated and level, well crowned and polished and with that Ibanez fell hat is hard to define. I also own a much more expensive Ibanez Prestige and the Gio neck holds up very well at a comparison. The finish is all black without any flaws. The guitar came well-adjusted and plays smoothly.

Drawbacks? Of course, Ibanez had to cut corners somewhere to keep the price down and this shows mainly on the tuners and bridge. They are not by any means bad but the turners does not feel as precise or stable as on my Prestige (no surprise) and the fixed bridge give a somewhat cheap impression. The electronics is another area that could use an improvement. Both the tone and volume are more or less all or nothing meaning that nothing much happens when you turn them and once something happens it's all happens at once. However, a soldering iron and a few cheap components would solve this easily.

Maybe most important, how does it sound? Well, I have very mixed opinions about the pickups! Through my Line6 X3 Live and headphones I can get some really good distorted sounds but I have not been able to dial in any decent sounds though my Blackstar ID60 amp be it clean or distorted. The clean sounds are both dull and harsh at the same time and sort of lifeless. The distorted sound through the amp tends to be edgy (in a bad way) and sharp. However, pickups are usually a matter of personal taste so your mileage might vary.

All in all this is a great playing guitar that can be improved even further with a few upgrades.

Price performance is conditional

Stoney, 31.12.2013
I bought the 7 Saitige Ibanez once for testing and must say that the price performance ratio is not quite right, unfortunately.

Even with a cheap guitar, you can expect them to be reasonably adjusted, which was not the case with the supplied model. The octave purity was once something of it, that one can say here soon, which was not set at all. After I had set the guitar so then only once, you could finally play with it. Here comes the typical Ibanez neck for a benefit, very pleasant and equally familiar! The potentiometers are made of cheap plastic and do not really look great, but this can be easily changed.

The 3 way switch is nothing, it has no reasonable grid point and is not built for eternity. The sound of the pickups is very dull and they also come very quickly into the whistle, but this can be solved with more or less effort and cost. However, I have decided to keep the guitar and optimized it accordingly and donated their EMG 707 Pickup's, but for this conversion, expensive conversion measures are necessary as the milling for the pickups and the pickup frames are too small for the EMG 707! So before carefully consider whether you can do the self, otherwise it is not worth it and you should get one with EMG pickups!
