Great Value
LeoDeo, 25.05.2015
The main selling point here is build quality at a very good price.

I got a 12-02 version rather than the 12-01 I have seen elsewhere. Ibanez is shy about what changes have happened. I think maybe the pups have been changed since they now have no name stamped on them.

The arm and action are fantastic. It is very playable. The ebony fretboard looks nice and dark and the abalone inlays look interesting. It uses 9s for strings which helps. The fret edges are super smooth. The machineheads keep the strings in tune.

The flame maple body is nice but the flaming is a little 'dirty' looking. The binding is very good. The body size is fine for sitting and playing.

The bridge is not to my liking. It is not very well made with the 'gold' plating matted about the screw thread - that should have been binned. The tailpiece seems okay. Likely I will change both for Gotoh pieces.

To the pups. These are fine if you like a bright sound. I prefer the original 335 sound. This is doable with some Gibson Classic 57s or Burstbucker 3s etc (See YT). However, the pups with no name (they are not stamped) sound very pleasing through a Fender Blues Junior III... Maybe that bright maple sound is like a Strat or Tele... I need to explore this. Might sound even better using Gibson pups... Decisions... Options...

The pup options are useful but not essential. Basically the neck pup can be set to parallel, split or normal. Normal sounds loudest. Play with it until you find what you like. I have an Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro which has split pups options and I rarely use them.

Whatever, for the loot (and the price has dropped since I bought it) this is a very good guitar. Even if you need to spend a bit to get near to the 335 sound. The basic guitar is very well put together and a real bargain.

Very happy
Curt R, 06.11.2020
Was wanting a nice hollow body electric for a long while, as I didn't own one. I wanted to get a Gibson ES-335, but couldn't justify spending over £2000 for one. Thought about getting the Epiphone, but didn't like the headstock and usually find the pickups to be a bit lackluster.

I spotted the Ibanez and loved the look. It was a toss up between this model and the AS93. In the end, I pulled the trigger on this model.

This is a very good instrument. The fretwork is excellent and the nut is cut perfectly. The neck is fatter than I'm used to (used to playing ESP Ltd's, Gibson slim taper, Fender American Standard etc.) It's not too fat though. It's great for playing chords, especially if you like to wrap your thumb around on the low E string.

It holds tuning very well and the bridge design is fantastic, with the cutaways in the bridge so that the tailpiece can be screwed right down and the string not bind on the back of the tailpiece.

The only 2 cons are that
a) The binding has some scuffs, here and there, which you shouldn't expect on a nearly £900 instrument.
b) The fretboard and frets feel a bit scratchy, when doing vibrato/bending. After the first re-string, I polished the frets smooth, which helped a bit, and after several hours of playing in time, the fretboard feels like it's smoothing out a bit.

All in all, I'm very happy with the purchase.

Best semi-acoustic I've owned.
Xiaoming, 09.03.2015
This guitar is stunning. The best hollow body at its price range.

Features
The guitar is quite flexible. 2 humbuckers with individual tones and volume controls. The neck pickup is connected to a trisound switch, offering parallel, single and series options. It also has a high quality Ebony fretboard.

Sound
The sound is amazing, thanks to its amazing design and craftsmanship. The 2 stock pickups, Super 58 Custom, is the cheap down version of Super 58, but are nevertheless decent. I eventually replaced them with a set of SD and the improvement was not major but noticeable.

Quality
The Ibanez beats all its competitors hands down in this aspect. Besides all signs of great craftsmanship one can ever imagine, the AS153 has the finest fretwork I have ever seen.

I took my time trying to find some flaws/defects to put into the feedback, but I've completely failed. This guitar is as close to perfection as an instrument can ever be.

Please purchase with confidence.

Highly Satisfied!
Inon, 02.09.2015
Build Quality: the guitar body, bindings, woods, color work are all of great quality. The ebony fret-board and fret work is of very high quality.
Pliability: Had to do a short setup mainly for my favorite string gauge and for strings height and intonation - other than that the guitar came almost perfectly ready to play smoothly out of the box (as mentioned the ebony fretboard and frets were constructed very well). I'm very sensitive to the neck's back contour shape which is slightly thin and doesn't have enough shoulders for my taste but even though I find it very comfortable and can play it for a long time without any special fatigue.
Sound: I play Blues/Jazz and the alnico-2 pickups that this guitar come with sounds great and I can get the sound i'm looking for in terms of dynamics and EQ - still I might think that this guitar could sound even better with a Gibson 57 classic pickup or similar one in the neck position. The Paralel/Serial/Single switch is very nice feature as well - giving the player more options for more styles.
Conclusion: Great, very versatile and very high quality guitar!!! great value for the price too.
