Nice Compact, well made with great features

23.08.2016
I play in a small acoustic trio and do occasional duo gigs. I was looking for a lighter easier to transport package but with no compromise on sound. I have a 20 year old set up (peavey xrd680s) which has served me well and more than paid for itself but can be a pain to transport (especially if you want to have a beer afterwards!).
So I was not looking to compromise on sound quality. I have considered other HK audio products (e.g. Lucas perfrormer) having seen them in action. Also looked at the Bose system, but none of them matched my needs to have everything in one package ? enough for 3 vocals, 2 guitars and input for music between lives sets. The 608i seems to be the first to do everything and have a few tweaks like the Bluetooth mixer.
So far I have not been disappointed. I have used at 2 gigs and the sound seems to be pretty impressive.

The 1st gig involved a small bar at the end of my road. So no need to take the car - I could simply wheel the unit down (using the trolley) bag and carry the extra bits. I decided to buy both the stand set and the pole for potentially different applications. For this gig I used the poles to spread the sound more. Setting up was easy ? the poles and cables are nice and compact but give sufficient height to spead across the room. Plugging in was easy and only one power source needed.
We were lucky enough to have a part time sound man around and this is where the ipad mixer was nice ? he could wander round the room and tweak the sound. A real luxury for us ? effectively a front of house mixing desk with no cables leaving us to worry about playing the right notes.
Sound was apparently great. It didn't always sound perfect to the band as we were slightly behind the speakers so we didn't hear the same as the audience.

We did have one problem were one of the inputs on the unit got nudged and we got a bit confused about whether the level was on the Ipad mixer or on the unit. Once we got everything right it was really handy to be able to save all the settings on the mixer for future reference.

Packing up was also easy and it was great to enjoy a few beers with no driving to worry about. Getting the gear in a cab would also be easy. The main Sub / Mixer unit is actually not that heavy and easy to lift. I reckon the whole rig is only 25-30% of the weight or size of old set up and in many ways better sounding. The Bass is especially nice

The 2nd gig was a party where I had no idea what was already there. I had one of those common headaches for acoustic bands where there was already a big sound system in place for a dj and electic band. Having considered plugging into their rig (and all the issues that can create) I decided it would be simplest to set up with the 2 speaker stands in amongst their gear. I got the sound right for us then took a line out into the main rig. This gave us full control of our sound without having to fiddle with the main mix. Judging from the audience the sound was great and we were able to finish up and get our gear cleared in quick time. I found the trolley bag great to stuff cables into for tidying up away from the stage.

I can also see the Bluetooth input being really handy for playing backing tracks from an ipad for solo performers

So far so good then. I have found this unit has given me new enthusiasm for gigs as I can now avoid the gear headaches. I haven?t used yet with the pole but I can see how that set up will be useful where floor space is limited or if you are worried about stands getting knocked

Service from Thomann has been excellent throughout. They provided some helpful advice, got everything to me in good time. It was well packaged and even provided prompt service when one of the screws was found to be missing.

So I am really happy. As always there is scope for improvement in the future. I worry about the location of the mixer panel. I can see beer spilling down from the top surface onto the controls. We managed to inadvertently nudge one of the controls. Maybe a flap on the panel which can be closed when the ipad mixer is being used would work
A USB charge slot might be handy if you are using an ipad all the time. I also wonder if an option to use One stand and one pole might be handy in some situations.
Finally an additional Line / inst switch would help me squeeze the 2nd guitar in. Using the line input is not really enough gain for a pre-amped guitar. But these all minor niggles from someone who really ikes the product and loves the sound/weight ratio and can even enjoy a beer after the gig!

Stops 3times when I was playing a gig!The sound is not what I was expecting!

Jimmy Angels, 07.09.2018
First of all it's not reliable. This system stops 3 times when I was playing a gig!The sound is not what I was expecting. Not enough power for a big venue -150-200 people or more. Also maybe here is not the right place to mention but the delivery by DHL to Cyprus sucks - I had to go to pick up the items my self from the post office. Very disappointed from Thomann and HK sorry :(
