Poor life time, poor tuning stability
TrEr, 09.07.2020
I love pure nickel strings so expectations were high for these GHS Balanced Nickels.

At first I loved them. Maybe slightly on the bright side for my taste but that's to be expected with a brand new roundwound string, even when it's pure nickel.

Then the problems started...

These are round core strings so certain precautions must be made to avoid the windings loosening from the core. Basically they need to be crimped or bent 90 degrees before cutting (although the packaging says absolutely NOTHING about this...). I installed them correctly and like I mentioned earlier I loved the initial sound.

The intonation needed to be adjusted of course and to do this I obviously had to loosen the string tension. The first sign of any problems came when tuning back up to pitch. The A-string started making these weird metallic clicking noises when tuning back up. Somewhat similar to the clicking you will hear from a car engine when it's cooling down. I can't say for sure what was causing this but I suspect the windings must have loosened and started to shift against the core as the tension was increased.

Whatever it was the strings seemed to work fine... at first. Then they suddenly started a rather steep decline towards a completely dull and "dead" sound. I can't say for sure if this had any connection with the "clicking" or with loosening/re-tightening the strings but I don't think the strings are supposed to behave like this. But then again, this is GHS and the Boomers have a kinda similar steep (but less extreme) slope towards "dead".

Just to be clear: I usually love pure nickel strings so it's not that I expected these strings to stay bright and zingy. My favorite pure nickel strings, the excellent Pyramid Pure Nickels, just keep getting better, warmer, FATTER the longer I used them. Their development over time is almost like a good set of flatwounds: They just keep getting better and although all brightness is long gone they don't sound "dead", even after YEARS of use. They sound FAT.

The GHS Balanced Nickels on the other hand go DEAD within less than 10 hours use. Very poor!

Tuning stability was also worse than most strings with these GHS Balanced Nickels.

If only ONE string had gone bad I would have put it down to bad luck and a faulty string. But when the entire set goes dead like this it's either a flawed design or deliberately designed to sound like that. And in either case I simply cannot recommend them unless you really like the sound of dead strings. And just to be clear: When I say "dead" I don't mean "dark", "warm", "mellow", etc. I mean DEAD.

Very disappointing but I guess you might like them if you like "dead" Boomers and want something even duller.

Wunderbar ausgewogen
JoPoe, 17.09.2019
