Your best friend for your home studio

Over the last few months I´ve been looking for and comparing the different audio interfaces there are in the market for using with the ipad. After being thinking and thinking I decided to buy the Focusrite itrack Dock and I´m going to put into words the reasons of my decision.

To begin with I wanted to buy an interface that could power my ipad. I´m not going to use it for gigs (for the moment) but I didn´t want to be depending on the battery of my ipad. Having this considered my search became limited to 4 or 5 interfaces.

Another important point I had clear was the price: I cannot afford spending much money and regarding this aspect the itrack Dock has a big advantage comparing with the rest of interfaces on sale for ipad as of today.

The third important aspect to me was the possibility of plugging in more than one instrument to play at the same time.

I started to look for information about the product and I found that the itrack Dock accomplished most of my needs but one: I wanted one interface I could use not only with my ipad but also with my laptop. Nevertheless, considering my needs and comparing with the rest of the interfaces this has been the best option and I have to say that I´m really happy with my decision.

Some of the features you´ll find:

On the frontal panel you will see:

- Gain 1 and 2;
- Power LED;
- 48V LED;
- Monitor;
- Direct Monitor;
- Headphone level;
- Headphone socket (at side);
- Ipad docking surface;
- Lightning connector.

On the back side you have some interesting connections:

- Input 1: 3 connectors: Microphone, line (1/4? TRS jack socket), and instrument;
- Input 2: Microphone and line;
- 48V phantom power;
- USB MIDI port;
- DC input connector;
- Power on/off switch;
- Kensington security lock.

- It´s robust and it´s design is very attractive;
- It´s exclusively made for ipad and works perfectly with all core audio app´s like Garageband, Auria, Cubasis, etc;
- It charges and powers your ipad (and other controllers, like for instance a MIDI keyboard);
- Portability;
- You can plug in more than one instrument;
- Getting started never was so easy.

- USB MIDI only works with class compliant instruments;
- It only works with newest ipads (lightning version);
- It doesn´t work with PC or Mac;
- The direct monitoring is ok but I would have preferred a mix knob to control playback levels (you have to adjust the headphone level and playback tracks);
- You only can use one MIDI controller at a time (it doesn´t work with a USB hub).

To end up, I think Focusrite itrack Dock is an amazing option if you are thinking about buying an audio interface for your ipad, it´s really easy to connect and so far I haven´t had any latency problems. The controls react very well and its connections allow me to plug in a guitar along with a microphone as well as a MIDI controller thanks to its USB MIDI input. All things considered, I believe that regarding its price this is one of the best interfaces you can find today for your ipad!

Focusrite iTrack Dock

I use Focusrite iTrack Dock with my iPad 4 to add a professional input and output connections.
Its have plastic feel but is very light. The mic preamps are good. With this sound card iPad looks more like hardware instrument with touch screen. Its work with all iPad sound apps.
I use usd midi with midi box and connect some midi devices to Focusrite iTrack Dock (keyboards, pads e.t.c)

Easy to use, light weight, good preamps, usb MIDI.

Plastic feel, can't use without iPad. Cant listen input sound without iPad.
