The best pr -amp of the market less than 1000

I was looking for a preamp with 8 inputs for my new sound interface in PCI (RME HDSPe AIO). After many discussions with people who worked with the products I was interested in, I finally opted for OctoPre.
What motivated my choice:
- the neutrality of its preamps
- The ADAT output allows to output 8 inputs in 44.1 / 48kHz, 4 inputs in 88.2 / 96kHz or 2 in 176.4 / 192kHz
- the possibility of emulating ISA preamps (I did not expect much in itself but it was always a plus).
- the reasonable price when compared to an ISA 828 (for example)

After a few studio uses (alone and with a JoeMeek TwinQ in front), several impressions emerge:
- We are really in the presence of quality stuff. I would hardly speak of high-end because there are models at Avalon or Universal Audio that are completely crazy, but do not spit in the soup, the neutrality of the preamps is not usurped, it's ultra clean!
- The AIR function is interesting, we have a nice color in the hi-mids, but certainly not worth a real AIR preamp. That said, it's always a bonus.
- It is a bit of a shame not to be able to set the phantom power input by input instead of the buttons "1-4" and "5-8" provided for this purpose.

I have not done it yet, but from what I could draw, it is an investment that I would do again. At less than 1000¤, if it is neutrality that interests you, you will not find better!

First impression: no low budget but recommendable

At the beginning of 2010, with the Saffire 24 pro, I laid the cornerstone for my home studio and had already in mind to expand it with an ADAT converter.

In addition to music production, podcast production takes place here in the studio, nowadays often with more than two voices. Therefore, the need for an expansion since the Saffire 24 has only two mic inputs.

Reasons for purchasing:

* Good experience with Focusrite Mic Preamps

* Insert paths in the analog part. Have here on four channels compressor and limiter (MDX4600) looped to catch loud laughter of the Podcastsprecher before the digital clipping intercept.

* Switch analog outputs between ADAT-Out and Preamp-Out. Could be important, depending on how the Homestudio landscape looks in ten years.

* Hope for further use (ADAT is hopefully enough future-safe) if the Saffire times because of no longer available Firewire interfaces must be patterned. Then with Thunderbolt / Ethernet / ...- Interface

The analog inputs of the Saffire are now on ice, so the six analog outputs of the Saffire are free for playback. So overall of 2xMic + 2xLine-In / 2xPlayback extended to 8xLine / Mic-In / 6xPlayback.

Evaluation after two weeks of use:

Expectations met. Preamps sound as neutral as used by Focusrite. The air filter is a matter of taste and depends on the microphone used. With a Røde NT1 I find it quite ok.

Problems with syncing with the Saffire were fixed with a script, which in the Saffire with the computer start the Clocksource on ADAT puts.

Main draw: 6 of 8 Analog inputs are retrofitted. This required a rack panel, additional sockets, and some soldering. The Combobuchsen XLR / Klinke with different impedances one can then of course not fully use. Input sockets on the front panel were probably not at 1U.

Conclusion: device screwed into the rack and there it remains, in the coming years audio from my home studio to the Internet to transport. Has exactly fit into the gap, consisted. The price of course not on Behringerniveau, but in my opinion not overpriced.
