Unique Solution for Brace Work but Could Be Improved
As acoustic instruments go, mic'ing a harmonica satisfactorily can be tricky. All the more so if you're playing with a brace or want to combine expressive hand wah with Chicago blues. This mic offers one good solution.
Importantly, it's small and light! So it's about as unobtrusive & un-cumbersome as you're likely to get for brace work. Phantom power allows a very light cable without interference.
The padded bag of thick felt is nice, but wouldn't protect against being crushed: it's a bag, not a flight case.
The documentation is pretty much useless.
The clip fits a typical Seydel/Hohner diatonic model. Frustratingly for the price, it's a one-size-fits-all hit-or-miss design, so you'll have to engineer your own clip if you want to play anything else.
As a mic, frequency response leans heavily to the higher frequencies, giving lots of presence. This is not ideal, as most styles call for reigning in of the higher and bringing out the lower end of the spectrum. With EQ, this improves nicely though. Dynamic response is poor, notwithstanding the condenser capsule, compared to e.g. Fireball V or SM57, both dynamic. As for directionality, it's moderately focused inwards (toward the instrument) and so moderately feedback resistant as mics go.
I get the best response (in terms of frequency and consistent dynamics) across the range of the instrument with the mic positioned over the lower end of the harp.
If you're handy with a screwdriver and a soldering iron, you could make your own for a tiny faction of the price with little trouble. I'd give extra stars for satisfying an unfulfilled niche in the market were it better value.
In all: a uniquely good solution for harp brace work or for hand effects with electric blues, but one that could be improved upon...
