Great gig or practice amp with loads to offer
pahamm, 27.09.2019
Bought it even though there were a lot of contradicting reviews on this one. Bought it for home and party use with Fender Strat and to stream bluetooth backtracks and music to it.

To avoid some headaches mentioned in other reviews, first update the software to the latest version and then learn how to use the amp properly by creating your own preset or installing the Fender Tone app. It is dead simple.

I did the above and am really pleased with all the different settings and sounds. Still breaking the speaker in but already pretty impressed that its such a good all rounder. Although normal music usually sucks through a guitar amp it is pretty good through this one, most enjoyable for the man cave or party on the move (ample punch to fill a hall). It weighs practically nothing for gigging and the bluetooth is a dream to connect for backtracks or music.

Some of the default tones are a bit iffy but I use it with the Fender Tone iOs app which is fantastic for downloading proper presets or for creating your own. Really simple and you can even download your favorite Marshall amp if needs be. It is like having dozens of amps at your disposal with all the effects you can imagine. Not just a gimmick and with a little bit of patience you will be blown away by the abilities and possibilities. So if you're gigging, just select your preset and stream your backtrack and voila...

Cons - It didnt come with the local plug adapter for CH (Thomann tsk tsk tsk). Petty peeve is that you are unable to connect bluetooth headphones to it, have to use a cable for late night practice sessions. Also would have been great to get the foot switch for free...just saying...

Just to frame any comparison here - we are talking about a rather inexpensive solid state amp but you will be surprised at how well it can emulate many valve amps without the usual valve headaches.

In summary, stacked against a Katana or Code I will still select it, not necessarily only for the sound but rather all the different functions and options it opens to you.

For a tech shy purist - pay the price and go for the valve amp and deal with its annual headaches and shortcomings.

New Fender Mustang - my review after two weeks
boch, 04.06.2017
The new generation of Fender Mustang was introduced in 2017 and replaces Fender Mustang v2 (I, II, III and IV). The new amplifier has modeling circuit that provides 21 amp models (more than the previous generation) and a bundle of many popular effects currently available on the market.

The interface is very user friendly, split into the three sections: preset selection, signal chain and the amp/effects settings. Four buttons and the sensitive pot are enough to navigate through the rich base of presets.

Native Fender presets are mostly very good. Clean channel emulation is excellent. However, higher gain amps (like Super Sonic) and non-branded amps that emulate popular brands (like Marshall, Orange, etc.) are of hi-fi quality, which means that they don't retain the natural tone of overdrive in the tube amps. The same situation occurs with pedal usage. After connecting an overdrive or distortion pedal to the clean channel, the results is a tone that is quite digital in nature.

In-built effects work much better than the external pedal, so the amp shouldn't be considered a pedal platform like competing brads (e.g. Boss).

As for connectivity, the amp provides a very easy firmware update via WiFi. Future firmware updates will hopefully improve the high gain tones.

New fender Tone app provides a very easy way to download new presets which are of quite high quality. Also, most of the signal chain settings can be modified from the app level. I personally find it easier to do it from the amp interface, which is excellent.

There may be some problems with Bluetooth connectivity, so firmware update on the amp is recommended prior to connecting with the app.

The speaker is not full-spectrum, but one must remember that due to the huge amount of amps, cabinets and effects it must do hard work to properly channel tonal properties of each of the selected signal chains.

I can recommend this amp for home practice and jamming on the clean channel. However, getting quality tone with lots of pedals may be a challenge. There are tons of options within the amp, experimenting with amp/cabinet combinations are highly recommended.
