A decent metal monster with few “buts”
DKthulhu, 03.12.2020
This is my first Viper ever. Was looking for a 7-string baritone, when I came upon this beauty. To tell the truth, it looked much better on photos. In reality it has this matte black finish that's just a magnet for fingerprints which are difficult to wipe off. In the long term it will form this high gloss area where your arm touches a guitar.
But the minimalistic style of this guitar is definitely appealing. One knob, one humbucker is all you need. And I kinda fell in love with SD Black Winter pickups: they have this gritty, gnarly bite that plays well with mean sludge metal.
The neck is chunky and not too comfortable IMHO. Had a bit of a problem playing fast.
Also, my guitar had this huge crack in the fretboard several frets long, as it was as dry as sand. And there was some rust on last frets. Action was poor from the box, so had to take it to a luthier to fix the crack, polish frets and make some adjustments.
Overall I'm a bit disappointed. As I've heard many great things about LTD 1000 series, this one piece sure was underwhelming, but that's mostly because of the condition out of the box. Not sure who is to blame here though, the manufacturer or the seller. But at least pickup is great, which is nice.

There’s something raw and primal in the SG shape that i like very much… the ESP/LTD Viper twists the familiar twin horned shape making it look a bit more modern and menacing.
The “black metal” is a stripped down version of the Viper, with 7 strings, a baritone 27’ scale, a single pickup, and a matte black finish.

Don’t be fooled by the appearance, though. This is no SG. The mahogany body is definitely thicker and heavier. And larger, with its offset horns. The neck is massive and a bit on the thick side.
The fretboard completes the “all black” looks with a very dark brown slab of macassar ebony, and no markers – except for a set of big GITD side dots. A very nice (and useful) touch.
The stealthy finish is ruined by the LTD logo, in big and shiny black bas-relief letters, that looks like an afterthought, and definitely out of place.

The bridge (and only) pickup is a “blackened” Seymour Duncan Black Winter, in matte black finish, with black polepieces and a black logo. The only control is a volume potentiometer, with no coil splitting feature.
It surely sounds very aggressive, with thick but fast lows, slightly shrill highs and a flat midrange. It’s very compressed, not very interesting on single high notes, but creates quite a thick wall of saturated chords.
I’ve read amazing comments on its versatility in various forums, but i would never call it versatile. The pickup i know best in the same ballpark is the Bareknuckle ceramic Warpig, but a direct comparison would be unfair… It does nicely its thing, anyway.
And fits the guitar, that’s a riff machine, much more suited for doom, sludge and death metal than for progressive and other technical genres – both for the not very refined and sligtly bidimensional tone and response of its pickup and for the neck profile.

LTD is currently producing its “deluxe” guitars both in Korea and Indonesia (and i’ve got strong feelings that the whole production will be soon shifted to Indonesia). My BM7 Viper is MII, and i have no way to confront it with a MIK model – but honestly there’s absolutely nothing to say about the finish and the fretwork – both impeccable.

I gave it 4 stars in "sound" section mainly because I'm not impressed by the Black Winter (at least in this guitar).
