Great First Guitar

TerenceB, 14.10.2014
When my eleven-year-old son declared that he wanted to take guitar lessons on offer at his new school I was overjoyed - although less so when he asked if it was OK if he could take my 1958 Gretsch into school! So I thought it was time to look into a "learner" instrument for him. Now I started out on a junk-shop Japanese copy that probably dated back to the early 1970s. It was dreadful! High action, slightly bowed neck, terrible sound... it's amazing I persevered, to be honest. Having tested out a friend's slightly more expensive Epi SG and a few Squiers I thought I'd give this a go - and my son liked the SG shape above all others, which was the most important issue to him. I'd have to say that this surpassed my expectations by some distance. The finish on the guitar was faultless, the feel of the neck and fingerboard was fine (if I was being picky then I might have gone to work on the edges of the frets with some very fine emery cloth), and the intonation and action was extremely good. But what surprised me most was the sound when I plugged it into a Mesa Boogie, the bridge pickup in particular giving out a surprisingly nice bite. For an added bit of fun, the tone pot has a Buckethead-style kill switch - if you press it down it cuts out the signal. I'm not saying this Epiphone should be viewed in the same category as a Gibson SG or even the high-end Epiphone versions (which I actually think *are* comparable with the Gibsons) but for not much more than a hundred quid this an excellent guitar on which to learn your chops. He's still not getting anywhere near my Gretsch just yet, though!

Great Guitar for Price

Arran B, 28.05.2018
Guitar is not my main instrument, but I wanted to get a good quality guitar at not a huge cost to play at home and for songwriting. This does the job perfectly. I cannot comment on how it would hold up playing live gigs often or in recording as I use it purely as a practice instrument. For full context I play mainly metal.

Pros:
Good value for money.
Nice design, doesn't appear cheap.
Wide range of tones from the pickups.
The Kill-Pot works well.

Cons:
The action, truss rod and intonation are incredibly difficult to get right. I play in drop tuning often and find that I needed to adjust these a lot initially to try and remove fret buzz. In the end I gave up after much adjustment (and I have experience adjusting these with other guitars and basses), but as I often use heavy distortion the buzz is not that noticeable. The intonation, however, is still a little off no matter what I do. Again, the distortion covers this up, but for more subtle playing this might be an issue.

Overall I think this guitar is more than suitable for anyone on a budget who wants a well performing guitar.

Good middle of the road guitar!

Callum, 22.06.2013
i had this guitar for about 2 years and never did it brake. i was sad to get rid of it but needed the room! The main thing about this guitar is the kill switch. it was incredibly useful when changing from a clean sound to a dirty sound.
i will miss this guitar so much and hope to buy another one in the future. you can play any type of music on it from jazz, blues, rock and found it was amazing at lead stuff. i don't think it sounds like a sg because the quality of the humbuckers were such a good quality. i miss this guitar alot and you should buy it from the only good supplier in europe Thomann. :-)
