Not just for Classic-Hardrock

Organic, 13.02.2013
First name:
The Engl Retro is an amplifier for the Hardrock lovers or Classicrocker. That is why I have looked at and described my subjective impressions exclusively from this "spectacle".

The 50 watt version is sufficient in combination with a 4x12 "cabinet to sound all the halls of this earth. Also with small clubgigs without PA.

I've played the Engl in band and live mode on a Blackstar Artisan 412BK Cabinet (4 x 12 "Celestion V30S) with a Fender Strat (EMG85 / SLV / SLV) & Fender Strat (Gibson P498T & Gibson P496R).

With "Retro" Engl means that the amp should sound similar to the models (Marshall etc.) from the 70/80 years. He does this only when the fingers of too much gain is left and the pressure switches for "Tone" and "Gain-Boost" in peace. As soon as they are activated, it no longer sounds RETRO but MODERN or BOUTIQUE (oh, how I hate these terms).

Tone & Gainboost knobs are an additional option, for example if a metaler wants to add this amp or guitarists need the "Ultragain".

Regardless of the sound control, the Cleancanal gain control can be torn open up to the stop and depending on the volume adjustment of the guitar, from clean to properly crunch sound (AC / DC lets greet). Who then the Gainboost still connects, already has more than enough distortion, however, with proper dynamics loss.

The Gain channel allows gain adjustment from 3 to 8 to achieve the typical "Retrosound" (depending on the pickup type). The sound is very touch-dynamic, powerful but never muddy. Each game nuance is clearly perceptible. In conjunction with other instruments (eg bass, keyboards, drums), the Engl is always assertive even at low volume. To get as a lead guitar player to "front", you do not need a high volume, because the amp always sounds "front".

For a Stratocaster with Singlecoils I have the following settings as pleasant felt:

Cleanchannel:
Gain: 6
Bass: 3
Middle: 6
Treble: 5
Volume: 3
Brightness: OFF

Gainchannel:
Gain: 8-9
Bass: 3
Middle: 8
Treble: 3
Volume: 3
Gainboost: OFF
Tone: OFF

For a Stratocaster with EMG 85:

Cleanchannel:
Gain: 10
Bass: 3
Middle: 6
Treble: 7
Volume: 3
Brightness: OFF
Tone: OFF

Gainchannel:
Gain: 6
Bass: 3
Middle: 7
Treble: 7
Volume: 3
Gainboost: OFF
Tone: OFF

With the settings of the Gainchannels, I can with volume adjustment (guitar) 2-3 and discreet stop completely clean and starting from 4 crunch and starting from 5 distorted and starting from 8 for lead. As I said, never muttered.

As soon as the Gainboost is activated, the amp changes from the "Dynamicsass" into a "Compression and Dynamics Standardamp" (If you like this sound, I would rather recommend the Engl Fireball because it sounds much more dynamic here) Gainchannel should not be higher than position 4. All that comes afterwards is really very muddy.

The circuit concept is "English-typical"
2 master controls for different volume accompaniment and solo (only with foot switch eg Z-4 / Z-9)
Channel switch Clean / Gain via push button or foot switch
FX-loop (serial to parallel) ON / OFF circuit (only with foot switch eg Z-4 / Z-9)
Tone / Gainboost via pressure switch or foot switch
Noisgate ON / OFF (only with foot switch eg Z-4 / Z-9)

When you find your own sound, you are spoiled for choice because of the many switching and sound options, as typical for ENGL-Amps. I've been using a couple of hours of tape and recordings before I've been completely satisfied.

An English language ...

13.01.2017
... what can you say:

I am fully excited about this amp. My requirements were actually to buy no Engl because I already own the Powerball and the Metalmaster. I wanted an amp for a very different direction: perfect clean sound and perfect crunch sound (also with lots of torn) and pressure and punch.

I've been looking for a long time about Mesa Boogie Mark Five: 35, Vox Hybrid etc. ... and I've been stuck with Engl again, because there are worlds between the retro and the others. If the clean sounds (with slight Zerre) at the Mark Five were also really great, in the high-gain range, however, the retro is quite a different league!

M. opinion Engl - as far as my taste is concerned - everything is correct, the most important for my concerns:

=> Clean low gain: perfect
=> Lead low gain: fat crunch, perfect for eg AC / DC with lots of pressure to play (outstanding, so never heard) in combination with my Les Paul Classic a poem :-)
=> Lead high gain: also here you are very well served with Metal, not quite as nasty as Powerball / Metalmaster, nevertheless quite "big tennis"

Optics: Hammer
Processing: 1a

What would I do without English?
