not only a great combo... a great amp!

12.01.2017
i bought it as a rehearsal amp, something comfortable, solid and versatile, without too much personality of its own...

i was wrong!

let's start to say that this little amp is a bit on the heavy side for a 112 combo, but it's remarkably compact, looks as finely made as any ENGL and it's literally packed with features. everything is controllable via footswitch (not included, i had mine custom made).
its pre + post gain controls and non-linear EQing of high frequencies make it a bit less obvious to fine-tune than other ENGL amps i know, but in the end i got a great tone. a bit Orangey, i'd say... but it comes at a price.

you can't have a great distortion and a chimey, fender-like clean at the same time. you simply can't. the key is the pre-gain control. low pre gain levels affect both cleans and distortion (i love overdriven cleans, and that's what guitar volume is for, but it's my personal taste), so you've got to find the sweet spot that works for your tone.

other features are a gain boost, a built in reverb, a volume boost, a mid boost.

the gain boost acts as a mid boost as well, and is very nice for some bluesy soloing on the clean channel. sadly it doesn't add any volume - the higher compression gives an impression of volume drop, actually.
on the drive channel it's good for smoothen up solos, and helps getting some heavier tones, but can't really replace a tube screamer. as it usually happens, hopes to get 4 "channels" from it are a bit too high... maybe 3. maybe.

the main volume boost add a fixed amount of volume, and it's very useful for solos.

the mid boost works mainly on low mids. honestly i never found it too useful on ENGL amps, but can help to cut the mix in some situation or to further shape your tone

reverb is really nice and smooth - digital, i presume, and ranges from a subtle ambience to massive cave reverberations

in the end, a great little amp with a peculiar voice (typical mid gain ENGL with some Orangey overtones, courtesy of its EL84 tubes), great for blues, rock, stoner, doom, and more or less everything except the most modern-sounding kinds of metal (djent, tech death and such). i'm extremely happy with it, and i'd even buy it again in head form, if only i hadn't got already A LOT of amps... :)

I bought this 2 years ago and was not really satisfied with the overall product, however I think this was due to being misinformed in some senses.

The sound is very dark and almost compressed and round sounding. Very good for rock and metal genres but not very good for other genres such as funk or country that require that Fender like tone.

I also was not impressed by the price as it did not include a foot switch. After investigating getting one I discovered you needed a few of them to get the full potential out of this amp which I found to be very expensive and not quite worth the money.

That being said if you want crushing dark tones for progressive rock, metal or anything of the sort this amp brings your there flawlessly. Just it isn't hugely versatile.
