Great upgrade for cheap Peavey vocal box
Udo aus B., 16.08.2013
We are a band with four dedicated gentlemen (2 x git / voc, 1 b, 1 dr), who go musically through the decades and play old 60s beat, surf, blues, pop (Beatles, Chris Isaak, Shadows, Tom Petty Etc.). We only have the voices and the acoustic guitars on the vocal system. We play mostly in the Proberaum and make only 2 - 3 performances per year, as club or garden gigs. We are amplified with a Yamaha Powermixer EMX-320, the audience is two Peavey-112s, as monitors run two community DnD12, which sound quite clear and 150 watts rms loadable. The Yamaha gives 2 x 200 W / RMS at 8 ohms, each box gets 100 watts.

A few years ago we had at the T for just 89 EUR / piece the above. Two Peavey vocal boxes "112i" each with a 12 and a horn bought. The things are loadable to 8 ohms only with 100 Watt program (thus 50 Watt RMS) and sounded so far rather dull. The low power was already enough for our program and for the few gigs, but the sound made us increasingly problematic. In addition, there were quick feedback. Already at the purchase we said, "only the housings are worth the price, let's see how long we get the sound."

Recently, we decided to venture the "giant investment" and put two Eminence Beta 12LTA, 225 W / rms / 8 Ohm into the Peaveys for 150 EUR. Beautiful loudspeakers by the way, class-processed and "made in USA" - a superschnchnik so. The conversion did not take half an hour (grid loose, speaker clamp and tighten, lattice). We simply left the existing horns, which did not hurt anything.

Then the surprise: We had not reckoned with such a bright and transparent sound. The whole small system including the monitors now sounds much cleaner and brighter, can withstand higher levels without whistling, more powerful. Subjectively now almost twice the volume without whistles is possible. Also the effects of the mixer can be different now, before we thought the Yamaha was defective. And the compressors of the Yamaha now actually work, before they have only led to the whistle when they were turned.

But the best thing is that we do not have to make an effort to sing. We can now play with the volume of the voices and the distances to the micro (before: micro swallow, scream as loud as possible). And to prove that we do not believe that: two of our women who came to the trial said "What did you do, you suddenly understand each other so well, that sounds much better."

Conclusion: Highly recommended. An Eminence Beta 12LTA is definitely a significant improvement for any low-cost 12-pigeon box that costs little money.

Supplement: We have been using the speakers for several months now. Our entire band sound is still transparent and impressive. We are still amazed at the great improvement that these two speakers have caused.

Good speaker ...
Frederic268, 23.05.2012
Especially because of the frequency response, this loudspeaker is very well suited for the reproduction of the voice.

The loudspeakers I use in the Proberaum mainly to sing singing about it. But there is also a synth and the bassdrum, which also run over it.
Everything sounds great and comes wonderfully against the drums, bass and guitar. Nothing is intrusive.

The speakers are hard-wearing and also make a growler or shouter with no problems.

In combination with two high-frequency speakers from Eminence and the appropriate crossover, one gets very suitable Proberaumlautsprecher for little money. Price performance is in all cases.
