Great pickup

Dervish Mad Whirler, 01.05.2018
This is a great sounding, powerful, and very easy to install pickup, and it looks great.

I think it is all pros and no real cons with these pickups;
Pros: Great sound, easy to install, great looks, come with all wiring and instructions, and great value for money.
Cons: Compared to very expensive or active ones, these are perhaps a bit less defined and have less output power, but most metal music does not need ultra clean sounds, nor necessarily more output, if you have the right pedals, amps and cabs.

What can I say about this EMG H4 pickup, but that they are great, especially for people on a low budget?
It is the most popular heavy metal pickup for those who want passive humbuckers, and for a reason or two...

I chose this one, although I could have opted for the 81's or the 85, which cost about the same, or gone for slightly or much more expensive ones, because I am not really into actives, and I don't want to yet start soldering and figuring out the wiring and everything to buy the more expensive hyped signature DiMarzios or Seymour Duncans popular artists endorse.
That stuff will probably come next, in a future guitar, or something.
These pickups can be in your guitar in a matter of twenty minutes, or so, without soldering; even the pickup switch can be connected without soldering, even though there is no switch with the pickup, as the connector has a screwable spot for it. You just cut the switch at the long end of the cables, screw in the wires and it is fixed.
And if you at some point want to connect the high end pickups from any of the available brands, you can just use the EMG cables and connectors with little effort, so you don't have to solder in those either.

I am a fan of the eighties pickup sound in metal; heavy sounds, but not too powerful like those overly boosted active monsters that generally all sound the same and sterile and are way overused nowadays. These pickups give me the desired sound.
These pickups are crunchy, but dirty enough to not become sterile. They are definitely much more powerful and well defined than my standard Jackson high output pickups.
Surprisingly so, really, as they are so low priced.
These pickups are clear and powerful in low, mids and highs, and have a frequency response that is wanted in the type of metal I like to make.

Straight out of the box, I can see the quality of manufacturing is perfect. A solid, heavy feeling pickup, and with the new pots, output, and all cables in the package, it is really the best choice for those who do not have the soldering skills, low-heat soldering irons, and/or patience to mess around with their guitars too much.

Conclusion; great value for money, and recommend it to anyone who wants to replace basic factory pups with affordable better ones.

Easy to fit, solid sound

ISBM, 10.10.2017
According to my order history I have had this pickup for 5 years!

Originally bought to make a cheap LP copy sound less cheap. It was not being used and I hoped this (and the H4A in the neck) would change that. Spoilers - it did.

Why these?
5 years ago I had done nothing more than change strings on a guitar so I went for the solderless option to make life easier. Seriously anybody would be able to wire these things up. New pots and some spare cables were supplied along with a very handy guide - brilliant stuff!

Sound:
If you don't like the rather compressed sound of active EMGs, don't buy these. if you really love the "one tone fits all" of the EMG 81 but don't want active pickups... don't buy these... Buy and 81 and dont expect to replicate it with passives! These are different; not as powerful as the active EMGs but capable of a decent metal tone. Role the tone and volume off and they do provide a decent heavy rock tone as well. On a clean channel they give quite a warm sound and one that I very much like.

I now have a collection of guitars of all shapes and prices but this old girl - my first electric is still used in occasional recordings because the tone of these pickups. Not so heavy that they are only useful for extreme metal but with enough grit to provide solid rhythm.

Finally, if anyone is interested in comparing brands then they may like to know that I do not rate these as highly as some of the Seymour Duncan's I have, but this is personal preference. I like the H4, but if I had to chose between it or an SD - then my money would go elsewhere.
