Good easy live recording!

Rainer289, 09.11.2009
I bought this device to be able to record church choirs simply and in professional quality live. Previously, I had taken a Zoom H2 of our church choir. For concert recordings I was looking for a higher quality alternative. At first I had the H4n in mind, but then again rejected. As part of my search, I found the Edirol R44.

The possibility to record not only a stereo microphone but a chorkonzert, but also with two supporting microphones (eg, for a choral recording to record the tenor and the bass individually), I found very good.

With a few small diaphragm microphones as the main microphone, I then recorded a musical. I used the internal stereoparar as a room microphones. The sound quality of the internal microphones is very good. They do not sound as brilliant as the connected external miniature microphones, but they are very good as room microphones. The stereo image is clean and precise even though the unit was on the floor under the chairs. The external microphones are recorded cleanly. The microphone amplifier is low noise and an extra microphone amplifier seems to me not to be necessary. In this way, I could also create a surround sound for the video part of the event and a CD from both stereos. The device has a loudspeaker, but for a reasonable assessment of the sound during the recording, a closed headphone should be used.

The device handles without complaint all connected power sources and with a set of cheap alkaline batteries, I was able to described above event of approx. 120 min. Without any problems.

Because of the small construction, of course, the operating elements are relatively small. After a brief familiarization phase, however, they are easy to use.

I find it regrettable that, unlike the big brother R4, the limiters and the roll-off filters do not work analogously before the converters, but only after the analog-to-digital conversion, so it must always be carefully selected. It would also be nice if the USB port could be used not only to connect to the computer but also to connect an external hard drive.

A rugged recorder without frills, but with high sound quality.

Wernie, 19.11.2009
I've been using the R-44 for over a year now, and I'm very happy with it, both for live recordings and at home for acoustic guitar recordings. It's chunky, but very robust and reliable, and always does exactly what I expect from it, namely professional recordings with up to 4 channels without overdubs and effect jazz. The sound quality (up to 24 bit / 192 kHz) leaves nothing to be desired for a device under 1000 euros.

The 4 channels are very helpful. For example, I do live recordings with my trio, one each for singing, guitar, saxophone and bass. Or I take guitar solo with the built-in microphones plus piezo pickup and magnetic pickup. Afterwards, you can mix everything with the built-in mixer, even using EQ and dynamics.

The microphone amplifiers are very good and deliver up to 56 dB gain, noise is not an issue. The built-in microphones are more than useful and sound mE better than my Audio Technica AT822 stereomicrophones. They tolerate relatively high sound levels and are well suited for Atmos to capture Raumhall.

I sometimes place the R-44 upright on the table so that the microphones are about 10 - 20 cm away from the sound hole of my guitar. The sound result is so good that I do not have to pull my two TLM 103 from Neumann out of the case for this purpose. At a greater distance, the built-in microphones sound very transparent and spatially, thanks to the AB stereophony, although not quite as low as the Sony PCM-M10.

Further advantages:
+ Bright OLED display, excellent for any light.
+ "Big" headphone jack with neat "steam"
+ Four analogue single outputs plus digital in / out (coaxial)
+ Flexible power supply options, long battery life
+ Built-in MS matrix

Disadvantage:
- Override LED is missing, is displayed only on the display
- SD card without tweezers hardly removable
- Level control somewhat fiddly
- no overdubs possible
