Monster-Synth for the hand

To be honest, it is quite hard to write a reasonable rating for the Dübreq Stylophone S2, because it is a truly unusual and extraordinary instrument.

At first glance, it looks like a toy: the rotating blue light, the juxtaposed rotary knobs without a proper label, a keyboard keyboard that you could play with a metal pencil - all in a battery-powered case with corners, edges and a built-in mini speaker. It really does not indicate that one can seriously make music with the device ...

... until the headphone or the line cable is plugged in and a sound that can not be more analogous: powerful, direct, rough, voluminous, lively, versatile and yet musically.

It is a fully synthesized analog synthesizer: two oscillators, two sub-oscillators, ring modulation, Hardsync, LFO with eight waveforms and frequency, amplitude and filter modulation, low pass, highpass and bandpass filters. The sound spectrum is enormous. It ranges from rich basses to fat leads to metallic sounds. And what ever immediately noticeable: the S2 sounds always excellent.

The oscillators are phenomenal. They have an amazing penetrating power, especially when they are played unfiltered. The filters (switchable) are first class, obviously no Moogfilter and without Eigenresonanz, but beautifully creamy and crispy. The LFO is not only very variable, but also extends far into the audio range, which increases the sound diversity by experimental noises. The envelope is rudimentary, but perfectly adequate.

The service is of course a bit habituation. I do not even mean the keyboard keyboard, which can be played with either the fingers or with the supplied stylus, but the multi-function buttons which, in conjunction with the blue light, indicate that something is changing but not the exact nature of the change inform. Here one needs either very well trained ears or the not too detailed manual (English). In this way, the S2 is always synonymous for surprises good. This makes sound manipulation both intuitive and enigmatic at the same time. You do not always know exactly what you are doing, or you can control what happens not always 100% - but it almost always sounds grand.

Who would trust this small metal box to play out its strengths in the bass range? Here the S2 sounds very full, very round, very musically, but if necessary also snappy or kinky. In the upper layers, the stylophone sounds rather harsh, at least not as velvety as a classic Moog, but with a separate sound characteristic.

For me, the Dübreq Stylophone S2 is a real insider tip: one of the best synthesizers on the market, when you put sound, directness, originality and price into the balance. Have I already mentioned that the (hand-made) device makes an extremely solid impression?

What you might miss is a MIDI connector, but it does not fit into the concept. Of course you can not store any sounds. With the S2, one is purely analogous around, with advantages and disadvantages, but above all without compromise. If you want, the S2 can control externally via trigger and CV input, be it with a keyboard or a sequencer. That works for example with the Doepfer Dark Time completely problem-free. After a while the folio keyboard is also fun. What initially appears to be a limitation, turns out to be a creative stimulus in practice.

Anyone who is still in doubt should listen to the S2, because the sound is a revelation with this typical analogue Schmunzeleffekt, as well as from an instrument, which will surely have a rarity - a stylophone for the individualist off the mainstream.

A stylophone? No, a synth!
Thoralf S., 28.12.2013
Admittedly, the part here is never the "Synthesizer of the Year" ... the part is too special. But who is looking for the special (and thus the challenge), is herewith quite well served. You can conjure up already very crazy sounds from this small tin box ... and a stylus is not necessarily necessary to play ... the fingers do as well.

The only criticism: The hole for the stylus on the top has no centering ... the stylus is crooked and wobbles around. This could have been better solved. In its holder next to the battery compartment (metal flap!), He sits but bomb-proof!
