Great sounding and indestructible.
Ralf4092, 14.02.2014
The Countryman DI Type 85 is a high-class active DI box. It features one 1/4" jack input (labeled "inst"), one 1/4" unbalanced link output (labeled "amp") and one XLR balanced output, as well as a ground lift switch and a -10dB/-46dB input pad switch. It runs on +48V phantom power or on a standard 9V block battery (it runs forever on battery, but I won't rely on it if I've got phantom power at hand.)
A phase reverse switch and a battery/phantom indicator would be nice, thus 4 stars in the features department.

Sound

This is a great sounding DI. It provides subtle coloration while maintaining linear and faithful response even with powerful and transiert-rich signals like from keyboards or electric bass guitars. It does remind of great class-A preamps (essentially, it is a neutral class-A preamp) in transducing a fresh and lively yet warm sound. It doesn't colour the signal as much as a Radial JDI does, it doesn't compress cheeky transients or add noise like cheaper active or passive DI boxes do. With its high input impedance it doesn't dampen the sound from weaker input sources like passive singlecoil pickups, I imagine it even works very well with piezos, though I haven't tried. Definitely a premium device.

The DI Type 85 in use

Also, this DI won't break. It just won't. You could literally roll it over with a truck (the lads at Countryman do so in their product video.)
The battery is easily changed by loosening one screw and pulling the chassis out of the sleeve, would be nice if you could do it without a screwdriver.
I use the Type 85 in two ways: Either I plug my bass directly into it with the input pad switch at "pickup", which makes for a very natural dynamic sound that lets the instrument's character show and doesn't sound boxy or thin like other DI boxes, or i put the input pad at "speaker" and plug the Type 85 between the speaker output of my 200 Watts tube amp and my speaker cabinet. According to the manufacturer, the Type 85 can handle up to above 1000 Watts of power. This way, I can get the sound of my amplifier (which is not blessed with a balanced output) straight to the desk without adding unwanted compression or distortion. This is what made me buy it, and I haven't looked back since.

Conclusion
A sturdy and reliable DI box without fancy extras for anyone who wants their gear to do excellently what it's supposed to do, come hell or high water.
