re rotary switch

04.01.2015
Hi, Just bought this product a few weeks ago and on your review it says that it has a 5 way rotary switch . This is quoted on your review ' 5-Way Rotary Vintage Burns (Rez-o-Tone Knob) ' Can you please tell me what exactly you mean by that cause to me it's not making any sense. There is no such thing. Do you do proof reading before you actually advertise ? I think not. It took me a while to convince you that this guitar has 22 frets and not 21 like it said on your review, now this rotary rezo-tone-knob, I wonder what's next apart from the case which is really flimsy, not sturdy at all. Believe me I don't want to even mention anything about the solder, very unprofessional.

Action is nice, finish on the guitar good as well and tremolo, yes it keeps in tune.

I cannot comment on the sound as yet as the guitar needs some work on the wiring, apart from the volume - B 500k - that I had to change. I hope that at least you'll supply me with the wiring diagram so I can re wire it myself.

Burns Bison Jet Black

hefus, 29.04.2016
design

Many Shadows fans (to which I count myself also) stand on the Burns Marvin, which however in the corpus form does not essentially differ from a Stratocaster (and of which I already have three). The design of the bison has always fascinated me, because it is more extreme and unmistakable. The old bison had a so-called Batwing headboard, which was quite extensive. I've got used to the more compact scroll headstock headboard. It is slightly angled to increase string tension and sustain.

Now - thanks to China's imports - my youthful dream has finally become affordable. And what fascinated me 50 years ago, the first time I held them in their hands, are these three-dimensionally curved horns: they are bent upwards, if they are. I wonder if and how this is cut from the full wooden block; Simply cutting out a contour from a plate is not enough.

After the guitar was not available in my desired color Greenburst with black pickguards (also not in London), I finally ordered a Jet Black, according to the picture on the website of the offerer with black pickguards. Delivered (already the next day) was the guitar with perloid pickguards, which I actually did not wanted. My wife and I, however, were so fascinated by the look of the instrument that I could not make up my mind to send it back.

An exchange later became due, when I had to re-record new strings, that one of the 6 tuning tunics jammed. Also the new instrument came (unfortunately) not with black, but with perloid pickguards. For this I am glad that the "new" is equipped with more beautiful (and somewhat more gripping) potentiometers.

Equipment:
3 Alnico Rez-O-Matic pickups. The individual pole pieces are not height-adjustable.

Rez-O-Tube Vibrato: The string ends are not guided by a massive block (like the Strat) behind the bridge, but by six individual tubes, whereby each string can vibrate in its "natural frequency" A "richer overall sound" (quote from the enclosed brochure). Well, at least the technique with the engraved aluminum plate looks very cool.

Double Switch:
5-way PU-Selector
3 position Tone Switch: 1. off; 2. Vintage; 3. Wild Dog

Master Volume

2 Tone Controls:
1 .: Neck / Middle Pickup (0.015 mF)
2: Bridge + Middle PU (0.005 mF), + Push / Pull (Neck-PU on)

The guitar was delivered in a very solid suitcase (not a Burns case, which is said to be lacking stability), plus a tool in a Burns leather case. The enclosed wrench for adjusting the vibrato springs is too narrow (maybe an inch?). I'll have to file it out a bit, until it fits the two hexagon nuts with exactly 8 mm key width.

sound:

The "twang factor" has already been played dry - Attack and Sustain leave nothing to be desired, especially in the deep locations. Because the neck pickup can be connected separately by means of the rear push-pull tone potentiometer, seven different (instead of the known five) PU combinations are produced: when the tone pickup is pulled, Neck- + Bridge-PU (5-Way Switch at the rear) or all 3 pickups (5-Way switch rear intermediate position).

The second toggle switch (3-position Tone switch) creates a "Vintage" or "WildDog" sound. The latter sounds very thin and pointed, strangely, however, only when the push-pull potentiometer is not pulled. When the latter is pulled, the 3-way switch causes very subtle, almost imperceptible sound changes. Theoretically there are a total of 21 switching possibilities.

In addition, the two Tone-Potis, which do not simply take away the highs as with "normal" guitars, but rather emphasize the mids. The rear Tone Poti has a 0.005 mF condenser and makes the bridge pu sound almost like a P90. Just in the torn operation, these controls take some of the sharpness. In any case, the Tone-Potis contribute significantly to the already extraordinary sound diversity of this guitar.

Handling / processing:

From the handling is the guitar is perhaps not everyone's thing, with 3.9 kilos, it is not a lightweight, but also not as hard as feared (my Fenix ??Strat weighs, for example, 4.25 kg, Paulas are, as far as I know, much heavier). The bison hangs slightly coping with the belt; The front suspension point at the back of the horn could have been shifted slightly forward. The vibrato lever hinders access to the switches and controls and can not be "easily removed" when not in use. Because of the above-lying jack socket, an angle plug is recommended anyway, because a straight plug (break) is dangerous. Pulling the push-pull potentiometer requires a strong "hand pressure"; Actually I can do this only by sliding my finger or fingernail under the edge of the pot. The cylindrical part offers too little attack surface, a conical pot is even worse to grip. A push-push pot (similar to a ball-point pen) would obviously be easier to use, but unfortunately, the breakdown is faster, as the experience shows.

The neck of Canadian maple is not very thin, but it can be played comfortably, even in the high positions. The neck-body transition is by no means as clumsy as the old original bison. The zero bond requires a certain habituation when bending in deep positions. And with the variety of switching possibilities you can lose the overview.

First of all, adjustments were necessary, as with almost every new game, where I see no problem. The tension of the collar was somewhat too high, the vibrato springs too loose. The vibrato lever funzt butterweich, after I have adjusted it, but does not allow dive bombs like, Such as a Floyd Rose.

The strings still have some room to go down.

Painting and finishing are faultless. Also on the fret and the neatly inserted rosewood fingerboard there is nothing to complain about.
