First of all, this is an unfair meeting! I have the luxury of having a real old Roland space echo, and it is not really a question of comparing this original to a digital modeling device. After so many times it was claimed that the modeling here was deceptively genuine, I must unfortunately disagree. If the old space echo sounds so to say three-dimensional, the simulation sounds rather two-dimensional. The sparkling, living thing in the analogue sound must give way to a somewhat lifeless emulation sound, but it is not bad. The echoes sound somewhat faded, and they are clearly reminiscent of the old tape echo, but they are always the same, while the original (also depending on the quality of the band loop, which causes new small surprises, for example, when changing the tape) is unpredictable And deliver very lively echoes. Perhaps this is not better according to the state of the art - but the sound of the modeling did not really convince me at first.

However, if you compare the Boss Space Echo with other digital delays, the impression is quite different: this device has already seen something of the special character connected with analog tape echoes - after all, it concentrates on the emulation A one-of-a-kind model, and contains one of the few digital devices both reverb and delay, as well as all standard options including self-oscillation, as with the original. Also synchronous fluctuations and tape flutter can be heard (but, as said, always the same ...).
For the stage, the old space echoes are suitable only to a limited extent, since they are too big, too heavy and too susceptible to maintenance. Only the modern model- ing version, which is certainly more reliable, is less helpful. Some tonal subtleties will probably not be seen live anyway, and so the purchase makes sense in this case - as with me.
It therefore depends on the expectations, the area of ??application, as well as the comparative yardstick.

The Boss device is certainly not bad, but you should not listen to it if you had an original in the employment! (How the film should not look after the book?).
The processing is Boss-typical super, and the additional feature Tap Tempo is for some perhaps the decisive extra, especially for the live use. And exactly for this I would recommend the not necessarily cheap Boss.

PS Meanwhile, I noticed that the Boss Space Echo over a separate channel sounds much better. So I loop the signal to the second channel of my amp, and have thereby the original sound quality of the guitar received, while the effect goes extra. That sounds great, and you do not miss anything ...

The device is very well-processed in typical boss-style and road-suitable. The operation is so easy from the hand that a look into the manual is not absolutely necessary. A push-button for on / off, one for tap-tempo, for live-playing wonderfully easy.

The virtual heads to be activated, more precisely their combination, are selected via a rotary control. This results in different delay rhythms. Furthermore, one can arrange a reverb, which however I do not feel too much. You can also "bend" the sound of the Delay by using a Treble and a Bass control.
Holding down the Tap button gives you the boss's own "twist" effect, which can be used to drive the device to self-oscillation. A special effect, which, in my opinion, but quickly wears.

The delay sound itself sounds wonderfully warm and "retro". The played notes "merge" formally with the delay sound, the whole sounds very organic and not at all digital!

If I were to expose something, then there is no memory space, because you quickly found several delay patterns that you liked. However, the usability would not be so easy.

If you want to do without the optional power supply, I can say that the device also works with the Voodoo-Lab PedalPower2 super.

Conclusion: a great delay for musicians who are looking for a tapable digital delay with analog sound!
