Great pedal, Crap FX!
Michaela C., 20.08.2015
I have used this live about 15 times in the 4 years I've had it. I practice with it at home also but it doesn't get heavy use. That said, I loved it for looping when using my Boss FS6 dual switcher but without the switcher you may as well just have a single track looper. For starters, if you want to switch to the 2nd track you need to hold down the right pedal for 2secs (sounds ok) but the same press has the function to stop the recording of the loop when you hit it once. The problem here is that it does not stop the loop when you PRESS the button but when you RELEASE the button. This creates terrible timing issues. Boss have given a way to program the pedal with a series of button pushes to simplify this process so it stops when the pedal is PRESSED but by simplifying it you take away the option to switch tracks (and YES that means a 1 track looper). It's not a problem if you have the external switch but if you don't, BEWARE! Its a feckin headache. On top of that the RC30 has started to malfunction thru the footswitch jack on the back so I cant even use it now. Even without the switch plugged in the RC30 is switching tracks, recording and turning loops on/off, Argh!!! It has a 5yr warranty but Thomann cant help as its outside of their 3yr warranty and Boss have been bouncing me from country to country because they say, as it was bought from Thomann they can't do anything. This was the only time in all the years I've dealt with Thomann that I've been unhappy. I rang them simply to find a contact number for a Boss representative that might be able to help with the problem and after the guy continuously told me that it was out of (Thomann) warranty (which I initially told him) he went to find a contact number for Boss and while I was holding someone else picked up the phone and when I asked where the original guy had gone he said he was busy with another call. WTF! I was simple passed off. Im a pleasant person and because of that he just swept me aside and hoped I would just go away, Ridiculous! It seems a good deal with the 5yr warranty but be careful. It was great in the beginning (except for the effects. The 5 effects are stupid. Coming from Boss you would expect something half decent) but it was only when it started to break down it got super annoying. Sorry Thomann but whoever was on your phones taking calls from Ireland on Thur 13th Aug 2015 between 10am - 2pm Needs a lesson in manners and how to work for such a great company!

Very good and versatile looper
JCS84, 27.09.2020
The Boss RC30 is a great looper pedal with many uses. I personally enjoy creating and playing over my own loops (and this unit can record very long loops) and I wanted to be able to quickly record song ideas (the pedal has 99 separate dual-track channels, and the audio can be exported as wave files). The recording quality is quite good and clear; not 24-bit audio but that's not noticeable in a typical guitar amp setting and noone is going to use this as a studio tool.
The construction quality is impressive; all the buttons, pedals and pots feel very sturdy.
As a looper it has several useful functions such as a countdown before recording and tap tempo, as well as stop/record/overdub/undo and track switching with different footswitch combinations. It has dedicated buttons to save/delete tracks but it requires bending down to press them.
My main complaint would be that the onboard drum machine has very few patterns and the samples aren't very good, but it's OK to use as a metronome and for recording basic song ideas. Also accessing the full functionality with only the two foot switches can be somewhat confusing but it does have an input for an additional footswitch.
I personally use it in the FX loop of a high gain amp, at the very end of the effects chain, with very good results using heavy preamp distortion and a variety of effect pedals. Overall I am satisfied with the quality and functionality of this looper. It's a good and useful tool to have for home practice and song writing.

Boss RC-30
ultz, 10.08.2019
It's well built and sounds great, but its options are pretty limited:

For the rhythm option the only available time signatures are 4/4 and 3/4, and if you want to use it as a metronome the only way to set a tempo is to tap it. No way to input a precise bpm. And even though you can slow down or speed up your recorded loops for practice, It is much simpler to just re-record them in desired tempo.

The pedal has 2 stereo tracks, but they are synchronized, unlike Boss RC-300 for example. Which means that if you want to have two unique bars on track 2, you'd have to first record two bars for track 1. It's a missed opportunity, and most of the times the overdub function for a single track will be enough, as you can just turn off and turn on your last recorded layer with a left button.

Built-in effects are just a toys to have a little bit of fun for when you learn the pedal. The only effect I could ever see myself using live is Lo-Fi.

And still I'd recommend this pedal over RC-3 just for the fact that you get a separate stop button for a small extra price. It is absolutely worth it. And if you never owned a looper pedal, you need to have one.

Not for performance
MelissaCloudfish, 10.02.2020
I have been trying to use this looper for performance and it's really difficult to switch between the tracks and to change memories. I have a FS 5U footswitch which is impossible to use live because in order to change tracks I have to hold it down for exactly two seconds. If I hold it down for slightly more it continues to change memories and I end up at memory 5 instead of memory 2 (for example) and have to reach down and scroll back with the button on the RC 30, which looks really bad during a performance. The worst thing for me is that you can only program a fade out IF you have pre-recorded sound. Unlike the RC 300 where you can decide how the track will end (fade out, loop end, immediate stop) you can only choose fade out when there is already something recorded, so if you are looping live, then you can only have an immediate stop. Really such a shame. This seems to be a general problem with the Boss loopers, (I also have the VE 5, and there's no way to fade out with that either.)
