Versatile & Thoughtful

Zobota, 10.01.2016
As soon as my impression changes, this review will be updated.

To start with the negative

The enclosed Footswitch has four pedal switches, as well as the one with the Series One 50 is delivered. The Series One 50 has the channels Clean ("Bright" Clean and "Warm" Clean) and Crunch ("Crunch" and "Super Crunch"). With the 4-switch footswitch, all of its 4 channels can be individually selected. This is unfortunately not the case with the Series One 104, because it has two additional channels ("OD1" and "OD2") which are selected via the two right footswitches of the Footswitches. The two left-hand pedal switches are used to clean and crunch, but you must first select the "mode" (remember: warm / bright or crunch / supercrunch) at the push of a button. This unfortunately restricts the amp a bit in the flexibility, which he could actually have. Some will not disturb it any further, I am disturbed however already, because I am at this amp synonymous for higher distorted sounds the crunch channels chooses and the latter booste by means of an upstream floor. This is much closer to my sound desires in the overdrive structure (Maxime: "strong distortion - less strong compression") than the amplified sound channels. So the Series One 50 would be for me the better choice, especially since 50 watts for my purposes (Proberaum and club gigs) are more than enough.

The built-in power attenuator "DPR" and the additional sound shaping potentiometer "ISF" allow the amplifier incredible versatility at different volumes. "Sleep / living room volume" is in my opinion however NOT (with each soundsetting) possible, although it is in some reviews to be praised.

I see the greatest strengths of the amp in (blues to hard) rock and (heavy) metal. It can be close to a good old Plexi and resemble the 800s, 900s and 2000s of the most famous British amplifiers. It is, so to speak, Blackstar's "answer" to the 410s (the one before the Series One was the top of my choice). However, the Series One 104 has its very own Trademarks in the sound.

I use it in my band in the style of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and prefer it to current models of the mentioned company from Bletchley, Milton Keynes, because it seems to be very well processed (the actual proof of this impression is, of course, Perennial), which I unfortunately could not attest to my 410 model.

Class amp, but .....

Timo2007, 19.10.2017
I mainly play rock and metal!
For over 20 years, I've been using Marshall's JMP-1 over a Reußenzehn power amp, creating a killer board!
Had to go back on a top section.
From Blackstar I already knew one or the other device and was always satisfied.
After hearing the S104 twice live, the decision had been made.
The first time in the rehearsal room was a bit disappointing, because the amp sounded very thin and heavy.
No pressure at all from below.
So I did not remember that ....

Either the guys from Thomann have sold me a Monday device or the sound control has a quirk ... or I do not know either.
I tested some EQs before and in the loop and then came to the official result with the Blackstar LT Boost (the little blue one for 50 ocks).
Nice warm clean sounds and fat, powerful Zerrsounds.
Now the rocker heart laughs :-)
The power reduction of the power amp is great; I would actually be enough 50 watts ;-)
Important for me is still switching over MIDI (have also? S Quadraverb einahm).

And visually, the Series One 104 EL34 is also totally sexy!
