DT 880 in comparison with DT 770, Sennheiser HD 600 and Denon AH-D5000

Bernd aus B., 06.08.2011
We have conducted numerous listening tests for our studio (radio and TV productions):

1. Open handset
Beyer DT 880 and Sennheiser HD 580/600 are the same. The Sennheiser are slightly more mid-balanced and play more dynamic, more fresh, particularly striking in contemporary music. In addition, they are slightly more comfortable. The Beyer DT 880 plays more balanced, quieter and flatter. The human voices recede slightly. But still the DT 880 is a listener of the reference class. As with the Sennheiser HD 580 and 600 the same sound systems are used, so also with the Beyer Edition and Pro. We measure and hear no differences between the models of the same manufacturer. (The Sennheiser HD 650 sounds to us too bassy and too nice.)

2. Closed handset
If you want a balanced sound, the Beyer DT 770 is clearly best served. It sounds almost comparable with the open ones mentioned under 1. The frequency response is not quite as linear, but the overall sound is very balanced. The slight emphasis on the deep bass and treble on the DT 770 does not really interfere, quite the opposite. For a closed, the best thing we know.
The closed AKG 271 is an alternative with a natural and quiet sound, if one wants to live with his bass weakness. We can not do this.

If you have a more noble design and more HiFi, the Denon AH-D5000 is also a question. It makes everything even more beautiful. Treble and low bass sound like you have an EQ activated up and down. But he draws a very nice sound picture with slightly weak mids, at a high price. The sound of the Denon more like the Beyer DT 880, with a portion more highs and low frequencies.

With us are the closed ones of Sennheiser HD 380 and HD 25. These certainly have in the disco or stage their existence, but against the listeners tested here they sound slightly topfig and a bit after "plastic".

My favorite!

blue_note, 12.10.2009
With the Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro the upper end is reached both in price and in the audio quality in my test field. It is very similar to the DT990 PRO and actually only does everything the DT990 is already good anyway a level better: the resolution is still slightly higher and the impulses come incredibly fast. The transients of a snare are reproduced very well and quickly. Both the AKG K271 Studio and the AKG K240 MKII sound in this point in the direct comparison with the Beyerdynamic DT880 PRO a little as if the attack time for an expander was too long. The bass boost of the DT990 is missing on the DT880, which makes it a bit more neutral. The DT880 can play all its abilities, especially with very acoustic and classical music. When you have him seated, you think you're in the middle of the action! With rock, pop and similarly strongly compressed music, he wich but fast a bit sharp. Sometimes such music styles on the AKG K271 Studio simply look more beautiful!

Unfortunately, the wear comfort is very similar to the DT990. The pressure on the head is slightly lower, but I can not find it comfortable, especially when I compare myself to the two first mentioned AKGs. However, I have not had any pressure on my ears, nor did I get a headache (although I am comparatively sensitive). It is therefore perfectly suitable for continuous use. The other minus points are the same as with the DT990 PRO: the size is difficult to adjust, the cable can not change and there is no shutdown function as with AKG.
However also belongs to the DT880 the spiral cable mentioned praisingly! There is also a big plus for the supplied padded transport bag, which adds a touch of professionalism.

Conclusion: Price / performance winner is Beyerdynamic DT880 Pro with relatively high 220, - Euro no longer. The price is absolutely justified! I personally bought it because he liked me among the test candidates best. Similar to the Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro, it complements itself perfectly with the AKG K271 Studio! To what extent the price difference between the DT990 and the DT880 is worthwhile, everyone should decide for themselves. Both are definitely very good headphones!
