Reasonable sound quality for reasonable price

simi1029, 17.01.2014
For its price its a very decent mixer, does the job at the church services we do with our band very well. (3 guitars, bass, drum set 3-4 vocals)
It's suitable for some bigger events also, because its have great connectivity options .
Great mixer from behringer.

Good sound and good processing but with mogelpackung!

Dantschge, 06.12.2011
To feel the processing quality, I've moved all the knobs, fader and pushbuttons. All controls are not too easy, so you can make precise adjustments. Also wobbles nothing or has game (to this day unchanged), until perhaps on the control knob of the effect device, which has some play and care would be treated, but still can be operated precisely. All sockets (XLR and jack) are screwed to the housing, the jack jacks are even made of metal. These are good prospects for a longer friendship with appropriate care and storage and transport in the appropriate mixer case. You can not tell the Behringer mixer at first glance that it costs just 300 EUR.

The obvious features for a mixer of this price class are very good with 4 AUX channels (2 of them pre / post switchable), 4 subgroups (mono), effect with mono-in (unfortunately) and stereo output, 8 compressors, overall 10 XLR inputs with phantom power (not individually switchable), elaborate routing functions, insert jacks for the first 8 channels and master out, 8 direct-outs, mute switches for each fader or channel / channel pair, override displays for each Fader (LED), controllable Aux-Sends and -Returns (now I believe I have everything briefly enumerated).

If you already have some experience with functional mixing consoles, the XENYX X2442 USB and all knobs, potentiometers and fader are well-labeled, so you can quickly orient yourself about their function. If you download the detailed English manual from the Behringer homepage, there are also no complaints about the accompanying, cheaply designed brief guide, which is actually completely confusing and not at all helpful to bring one the device close.

To test the sound, I have the mixer as an external effect in my DAW looped in, in order to be able to quickly perform a direct listening comparison with and without a mixer in the signal path. This shows that the mixer operates virtually noise-free, even at the highest levels (+60 dB) of the microphone preamplifiers. In absolutely neutral setting of all control elements (compressor, EQ, effect) and adjusted to 0 dB, it proves to be practically sound-neutral. Only a small (rather pleasant) thickening (possibly by the analog circuits) is to be noted against the dry DAW signal.

The EQs pack (with appropriate setting) strongly, but always also musically too. The frequencies of the EQs are well selected, or the semiconductors can be adjusted over a wide frequency range (100 Hz - 8 kHz) for the 8 mono channels. The compressors do their job without disturbing side effects and do exactly what they are intended for (dynamic compensation of the applied signal). There is no need to readjust the gain or faders, as with normal compressors. And the compressors do not increase the feedback tendency of a microphone, just as normal compressors like to do it. The effects device (predominantly the reverb) is not a "Lexicon multieffect" of the higher price class but discreetly in the background to bear well and the music useful, as far as the level of the effect is tastefully (rather low) adjusted. The USB interface I have not tested, because I bought the mixer not as a recording mixer but only for the live and rehearsal use.

Then there is but still a shortcoming, which from my point of view is a kind of mogelpackung, which concerns the number of channels. The channel pairs 9/10 and 11/12 can only be used to a very limited extent, since the XLR microphones (mono) can only be used with the gain up to max. 40 dB can be turned on, which is then really only for high-performance large-diaphragm microphones. And the jack line inputs (two per channel pair each) can not be controlled at all by the gain, which requires a sufficient line level with the connected sound source (direct connection of guitars / basses without powerful preamp is impossible) and also The level adjustment on the instrument or preamp itself must be made. For my case, the usability of the two channel pairs is only very limited because I have to deal exclusively with small diaphragm mics and guitars, basses and accordions with rather low-power pickups. This gives a point deduction in the features and also in the overall evaluation, since I would like to call the two channel pairs as a mogelpackung.

Then I have tested the pickups of double bass (piezo) and accordion (clamp microphone with battery feed and jack output) at the jack inputs of channel 1-8 and unfortunately had to find that the 40 dB gain of the jack inputs for the two silent pickups ( And therefore probably not enough for all passive pickup systems, such as electric guitars, as well as many older A guitars with piezo pickups), to bring their signals to 0 dB signal strength.

It remains to me nothing else, as my 8-fold DI-Box (DI-800 also from Behringer and functionally so that the weaknesses of the X2442 can be completely compensated) and a few additional XLR cables or the multicore To apply the weak pickup signals directly to the XLR inputs and press the + 20dB button if necessary. If I had not had the 8-channel DI box already, I would probably have sent the mixer back again, because I could not have used it for the imagined use in the band.

I used the Behringer Mixer to test a number of rehearsals and events where his sonic qualities could really come to fruition. However, I would like to warn against using the mixer as a universal solution because of the above-described minor functions, which speak against the Behringer Mixer as a single device for solving all tonal problems.

The first impression of the good processing quality has been confirmed after a total of 3 years of operation. This is also due to the fact that I bought the right case in the bundle, in which the mixer is optimally protected during transport and storage. In the meantime, I have sold the blender and case, since I recently could hardly use it, because the channel number was not enough for me.
