Heel-Toe for Großler
Würzgnom, 01.11.2009
My motivation to buy the Axis pedal was to learn to play heel-toe technique. I also have a DW-5000 pedal and a Tama Iron Cobra, but with shoe size 47 you have no chance with the heels to hit the heel with one foot - if you have shoes on certainly not ....

While there are some pseudo-heel-toe techniques that some species with big feet can do on small pedals, I could not make friends with these techniques.

That's why I bought the longboard version of the Axis double pedal. If you've previously bought a DW and a TAMA pedal, both of which come in hard-case cases, you're almost a little surprised that only a small box is needed, but what's inside is crucial.

And inside are largely preassembled the two pedals including base plates, the connecting rod with the universal joints, the beater with ball joint, two Korg and felt pads to stick to the beater, spare springs and various tools for mounting. An operating or installation manual is missing. Mounted the pedal but every average gifted amateur technician gets even without instructions.

The feeling is by design initially unusual, very direct but also very smooth. With the rigid connection between the beater and the footplate not only the footplate affects the beater, the rebounding beater also acts on the footplate.

With the infinitely adjustable lever arm, the ratio can be adjusted: with a large lever arm, the recoil movement is rather short and requires little force, a shorter lever arm gives the beater more momentum, but the pedal behaves somewhat sluggish overall. Everyone has to find their way.

Although I am very satisfied with the pedal altogether, there are also a few criticisms.

I would have liked the foot plate of the longboard version a few inches longer. With shoes it's getting close to me with heel-toe.

Adjusting the spring tension is quite a cramp. Below are two relatively stiff wing nuts. Unfortunately, the wing nuts are so wide that you can not turn one completely when the other is transverse. So you always have to make sure that one mother does not bother you, before you can turn the other with a lot of effort. If you often want to change the spring tension, this is pretty much on the fingers and the fumbling annoying pretty. Since you should improve the design - is actually just a detail ...

And anyway: as easy as the machine moves, so strangely are weirdly next to most screws and other parts. On the right side, the lever arm can only be adjusted with great force, the slider always jams something, so I have to drop some oil on it.

In the meantime, I have swapped the Axis Beaters for the Bakers of the Iron Cobra because the Axis Beaters with the steel ball joints were too heavy for me, and the light Beaters of the Iron Cobra are even easier to play with.

And heel-toe? I still can not do it right. If you start at the age of 40, it may take a little longer. But I optimistically expected to have about 40 years to practice (sigh ...). It is not on the pedal, because it runs 1a.
