AT4033 review

Maka, 14.06.2013
This microphone is quite something. It's solidly built; the shock mount itself is one of the best ones I've ever seen, even considering those that cost you a few hundred euros. Same goes for the mic itself. The body is solidly built and there is no doubt that Audio Technica uses quality materials. Nothing is flimsy or feels cheap; this is a serious mic.
The design allows it to be very affordable, but still being able to deliver world class sound. Sonically this microphone sounds clean, present, full and expensive. It reacts well to microphone techniques and is very workable and responsive. The lack of switchable polar pattern is the only downside in terms of features, but then again this keeps the price down, and if that's what you want, go for their other models.
It is incredible how good this microphone sounds. Combined with a good preamp and a nice room, you'll be making high quality tracking in no time. The best thing about this microphone is that it is sonically so flexible; it doesn't 'doom' the sounds to be of a certain colour. I can colour and saturate things differently later which is a perfect solution for a small studio that can't afford a vast collection of microphones.
Great job Audio Technica, this isn't a classic for no reason.

Audio Technica AT4033 - The ideal supplement

Florian aus O., 11.11.2009
This large diaphragm microphone from Audio Technica has become a great addition to our studio. In the case of large-diaphragm microphones, one thinks immediately of the use for singing, but this is not the main area for us. Right there it sounds a bit too sharp, which is perhaps synonymous with some other Audio Technica microphones. It is by no means bad, but still can not keep up with the existing (admittedly much more expensive) competition.

But where it is very much used is before guitarsamps, especially for heavily distorted guitars. Here is the somewhat sharp sound, which can sometimes disturb in singing, just right. We like to take a dynamic microphone for the guitar pickup and the AT4033 in addition, as it is just in the high frequency range so well supplemented. It is also equipped with a 10 dB pad switch and a low cut, as well as a maximum sound pressure level of 155dB (with 10dB pad switched on) which makes this microphone very versatile.

The overall processing is good and not cheap at all, both with the microphone as well as with the supplied spider. Altogether a good microphone, which should be quietly simply times before other instruments hang around to experiment, because there was already with us some pleasant surprises.
