Great first analog mono synth with a bold, powerful sound

thejoerevolt, 06.04.2018
Pros:

1) good price, especially when released (I bought in 2013, there are other more versatile options available now).

2) remarkably versatile for a single VCO (+sub) synth - you could generate a huge sample bank from this alone.

3) It interfaces with modular fairly well (I've used with a Moog Minitaur to great effect). The raw square wave is just a great, fierce, gratifying sound. I've layered mere transients from thing this over kick samples and saved mixes; it has that analog mojo.

4) midi Cv control is limited, but you can do a lot with aftertouch and mod wheel. its actually a great, creative limitation.

5) i quite like the keybed and find the aftertouch is really expressive.

Cons:

1) the lack of 2nd VCO is a but limiting - it's now somewhat superseded by the minibrute2/s.

2) The build quality is so-so; bits fall off here and there over time.

3) you have to work very sensitively to avoid the inherent 'arturia' gritty, distorted tonality (slightly marmite). It can sound great solo, but hard to blend in a mix (esp. bass), which is both a strength and a limitation. I'm not sold on the filter, in truth, and the metallizer tones sound a little dated to my ears (as do ALL the Arturia product demos). The raw tone is just great though.

4) A BIG issue is the that using the USB midi connection generates loads of interference in the audio - pretty frustrating and seemingly not fixable.

5) the input seems to noticeably degrade whatever source you're using.

6) a pitch envelope would open up even more possibility... i guess that's where you plug some eurorack gear in....

summary: I've used this on everything I've released since I got it and keep going back to it. Its really fun, sometime frustrating, but ultimately could never be accused of being bland. The basic VCOs are great. I'd buy again, but probably the newer edition to get a second oscillator and other features

n.b.: Arturia seem to go for quite a raw and rugged tonality with their hardware, which certainly cuts through a mix, but isn't right for everything. There's a grit and grunge to this synth across most of the sounds you can coax, but if you put the time in you can really coax some amazing results. I own a DSI tetra, moog minitaur, nord lead 2 and nord modular g1 - the minibrute is significantly more aggressive. Layer this up as and you'll destroy your ears! It really sings beautifully with lead sounds and little modulation.

Very Impressed

Daniel443, 04.09.2013
First off, I've given it 3 for (build) quality because I had to get a replacement initially as there was a loose metal plate rattling around inside mine. I've since read in one review that this has been a bit of an issue with some of them, and people have had other issues, so I'm being cautious here.

I do get that there's always a bit of a trade off between price and overall quality, and otherwise the thing seems pretty chunky and robust. I would also stress that Thomann were very efficient in sorting out a replacement, once you followed their instructions.

This is my first analogue synth and it sounds beautiful. There is a definite difference between analogue and digital - it sounds fuller and smoother and just plain classy. It's so nice to be able to just start from scratch with designing sounds rather than having to alter an existing preset. And it's true, not having the option to save patches actually seems to free you up, somehow (though I seem to gravitate towards crusty almost wurlitzer-ish sounds).

It sounds really aggressive with terms like 'ultrasaw', 'metalizer' and 'brute factor' - but I don't make dance or rock, just experimental lo-fi electropop in my bedroom - and I've found I've already come up with a bunch of ideas. It sounds great with my friend's homemade spring reverb as a send on my old 8-track.

I don't know if I could rely on it live, but it certainly fits well into a low budget home studio. I'm just running it with midi from Logic at the moment.

I like the fact there's a story behind it - that Arturia, a software company, worked with a DIY synth enthusiast to come up with something that doesn't sound like anything else out there.
