Dual Functionality Multi-purpose Mic

The Zoom SSH-6's big selling point is it's dual functionality.

The combination of shotgun mic and stereo "field" style mic is very handy, but it is difficult to maintain a good mix between the two input sources eh. The option to record in "MS Raw" mode is a life saver for this - it is possible to mix the amount of stereo mic compared to shotgun later in post production. The VST plugin to enable this function is downloadable from the Zoom website - perhaps this could be clearer.

I had to update the 1.1 firmware on my Zoom H6 to current version 2.0 to use this microphone.

The shotgun mic pickup pattern is perhaps a little wide compared to other popular shotgun mics, but for me its practicality vastly outweighs this. It's a great multi purpose mic with an excellent slimline design.

The ZOOM SSH-6 belongs to the extremely rare species of stereo directional microphones. The special feature is not only the stereo effect, but also its M / S alignment. This is my knowledge only in two Thomann Superlux stereo directional tube microphones. The ZOOM SGH-6 monomicrophone (Hyperniere) quite similar to the design I have also and was very anxious on the stereovariante. ZOOM has donated its so-called RAW audio format to its H5 & H6 recorders. With it, the stage of the M / S microphones via MS decoder (on the ZOOM H6 website under software) can still be changed later in the DAW (The MS-capsule for the ZOOM H6 can already be preset at the device) . A similar type of manipulation I usually only know of Schoeps with his Polarflex PlugIn. The advantage of M / S stereophony is the 100% monocompatibility. I have tested the Schoeps / Illusonic Double M / S Tool BF and Polarflex and ZOOM-M / S decoder plug-in Reaper. You can spend hours changing the signal. Because it is helpful, the ZOOM PlugIn has its own presets.
Technical data about the microphone can be looked for in vain. At the SGH-6 there was this information still. The length of the capsules is 15.2 cm, with a total length of 18 cm (2 cm longer than the SHG-6!) And a diameter (as with the SGH-6) of 25 mm. The microphone stands out with its anthracite color clearly from the other microphone attachments. The capsule position is also indicated by different ribbing of the straightening tube. There is also a right / left symbol.

A windscreen protector, but not a foam windscreen, is included in the delivery. Since the latter is not offered by ZOOM, one must choose something suitable from another manufacturer.

Practice: The advantages of this 2-part capsule is the very good interplay of microphone and recorder. Here the manufacturer has done very good work. The preamplifier with gain control is light-weight from high quality, but not too light and the acoustic result accordingly. The sensitivity and directivity is not as strong and pronounced as with the SGH-6, which makes the microphone more suitable for interview. When I switched on for the first time, I felt like a room similar to an artificial head. Of course this is not so and the first impression flies after a few minutes of listening. The recorded signal is of high quality. Despite its enclosed windscreen the microphone is very wind-sensitive. Also operating noises are caused by the capsules without a tripod to the problem.
Unfortunately Zoom has slept the microphone a transport packaging to spend. I found a "transport roller pack (length adjustable from 200-350 mm, inner-ø 65 mm)" at the Modulor company, which has solved the transport problem for me optimally. For mobile use in a lens case (eg MENGS® High Grade Neoprene - available in four sizes). Despite the overall length of 34 cm the operation is no problem and just handy. Overall, my already good expectations of the ZOOM H6 and its two capsules with the SSH-6 were not disappointed and I am satisfied. Thus belongs - a microphone with its own self-conscious character, which extends the range of ZOOM microphone capsules by a further highlight. Anyone expecting a SGH-6 in stereo will be disappointed.

Use on a DSLR / video camera

In pictures you can often see the ZOOM H5 & H6 Recorder with the SSH-6 with the ZOOM HS-1 Cameraadaper mounted on a DSLR / video camera. That's not a good idea. Why? The contact area of ??the adapter / recorder is very small. The connection is thus very unstable. In addition, the combination recorder / directional microphone protrudes due to its length (or too far backwards and thus makes the operation more difficult) and throws shadows (especially when using wide-angle lenses). In addition, the use of sunblinds / compendia / mat boxes is only possible to a very limited extent (Who has a ZOOM Q4 or Q8 VideoCamCorder has fine out? There stands because of the very far-backed microphone recording nothing). Also the recorder is not decoupled via the adapter. The Rycote ZOOM H6 suspension can help. However, the overall construction is somewhat high, a tripod is mandatory.

With the introduction of the ZOOM F8 Field Recorder comes a 3m long connection cable (Zoom ECM-3) with mini-port and camera adapter. Thus, a microphone can also be used.
