Indespensible piece of kit!
Bavarian Barbarian, 03.07.2019
The Zoom G1on is an absolutely brilliant piece of kit – as long as you understand its capabilities and its limitations.

I bought the G1on as a sort of testbed for my main pedalboard. At this price-point, it’s not reasonable to expect the sound of the built-in effects to match the sound quality of more expensive individual pedals. However, the G1on allows you to experiment with different combinations of effects and refine your ideas of what you want BEFORE you drop hundreds on individual pedals.

The G1on turned out to be a better bargain than I anticipated, though. Because it models a variety of amps (in addition to a multitude of effects), the G1on serves as an awesome headphone amp. Its relatively compact size and ability to operate with 4 AA batteries as well as an AC adapter make it ideal for both travel and practice at home. For the same reasons, the G1on works well for amateur/demo recording.

Price. Seriously, at euro 55 you’re lucky to find a decent single effects pedal, let alone a useable multieffects pedal.

Flexibility: if you take the time to read the owners’ manual and to experiment a little, you can create some VERY useful patches and present a huge variety of sounds.

Looper and drum machine: the built-in drum machine provides a useful – if limited – array of beats. Combined with the 30-second looper, the G1on allows you to create rhythm tracks that you can jam over.

Effects quality: sure – the G1on effects don’t sound quite as good as the “real” pedals and amps that inspired them, but they are still pretty darned convincing. If you want to know what any combination of pedals/amps sounds like, the G1on is a good place to start.

Portability: Compact, light, and battery-powered – the G1on is the perfect travel/headphone amp. It easily fits into the accessory pouch of every gig bag and, with a pair of headphones, enables you to create arena-like sounds in your hotel room without irritating your neighbours.

It’s made of plastic, so it isn’t the most robust piece of equipment you’ll ever own. From this standpoint, it probably isn’t suitable for gigging. Don’t get me wrong – you don’t have to baby it, but you should just be reasonably gentle with it.

Some of the patches can be a little noisy. For the most part this can be mitigated by adding the “ZNR” (Zoom Noise Reduction) effect to the patch and turning the sensitivity up to around 16, plus playing with the order of the effects. If you do this and keep the volume down, it’s possible to get a pretty clean signal.

Programming isn’t necessarily intuitive. It’s definitely worth your time to read through the owner’s manual and play around with the pedal. Some of the patches are things that you will never use, while some are not in the order that you’ll want, so you may end up spending some time moving things around and playing with the program. Once this is done, though, you’ll have a very flexible tool at your disposal.

You need an adapter for most headphones: the output jack is standard (1/4”), while most headphones today have mini-jack plugs. Adapters are readily available (studio headphones sometimes come with them), but you should know that you will need one.

Bottom line: If you don’t already have a Zoom G1on, then you are already behind the power curve. Buy it today! Seriously, unless you are gigging or playing with others, this is a better investment than an amplifier!

Great MulitFX unit!
Omenchs, 24.10.2019
I mostly use this at home withe headphones or with a combo amp.
The interface is fairly simple and you learn how to do everything quickly. Some of the sounds that come inbuilt are good but tweaking them is very easy and making your own and experimenting is a lot of fun. I think the general quality of sound is compatible with most digital MulitFX units which is amazing at this price point.
I don?t know how til will hold up to much gigging because it is plastic and maybe not very durable, but if you are careful I thing sound wise it?s good enough for most gigs.
