Great little unit

Machete, 02.06.2017
use it to practice at home. It has an aux input if you want to play along to songs. The single guitar input is supposed to work with both active and passive basses. You could send the output to your headphones, or to other devices but in that case you may need a DI. I can see someone using this unit in small gigs, why not.
Unfortunately it doesn't have a direct USB audio interface to your pc. The USB port is just for firmware upgrades. You could also power this unit through USB but I read this is not advisable.

The first thing I want to say about the sound quality is that this unit is dead silent. I have an old Korg Pandora device that always has some digital hiss in the background whether you are playing or not.
This unit only gets a bit noisy when you crank up the gain to the hilt in certain patch combinations, but this is natural of the real pedals that it emulates.

The compressors, amps and preamps are very useable. The delays and reverbs are great. The weird modulation effects are for the most part unnecessary and gimmicky but it seems that all multi effect manufacturers feel obliged to dump them on their products for some reason. I would have preferred if they had added some guitar amps instead as extras. I'm still playing around with the distortion and fuzz effects to see if I can get a sound I like, we'll see.

This unit has an unlimited combination of effects and settings. You can chain up to 5 effects per patch, and you can tweak the order of each effect in the chain. You can try any crazy combination of effects. Most of the effects come with several editable parameters, like eq, gain, freqs, mix of wet and dry signal, etc.

It looks like the pedal controls volume by default, but each patch lets you choose other parameters that are available in the effect chain instead so that you can control them dynamically with the pedal.

The point is that you are bound to find something useful, you just have to tweak and experiment. What I don't like is that there are no user specific memory banks, you just have to overwrite any of the existing factory patches, but in any case there are a hundred slots available.

I found the user interface very intuitive when it comes to editing patches, I had no trouble understanding it, but I had to read the manual to know how to trigger the tuner and how to scroll through patches for example.

I haven't used the looper properly yet. The drum machine is handy for practising but to be honest the drum samples are not that great.

I think this will suit people wanting a small portable unit for practicing. People new to effects can get an idea of what real amps and stomp boxes sound like before they buy the real thing. I think it will also suit anybody that it's not too fussy and is looking for a ?swiss army knife? device at a great price.

Zoom B1Xon Bass Effects

27.07.2014
I've been a fan of Zoom effects since the 1010 in the mid-late 90s have owned the 506II, B2, B3 and MS-60B and found the B3 to be the pinnacle for its interface and onboard sounds. As I found myself without any bass effects, I heard about the new B1on and B1Xon units and when I saw the price at Thomann and knowing what to expect from Zoom effects, this was a no-brainer for me.

I opted for the B1Xon for the built-in expression pedal and as is usual with Thomann, I received it quickly and well-packaged. Opening the box, you have everything you need to get going immediately as Zoom have kindly supplied 4 AA batteries. As you can power the unit from USB, which is also used to transfer firmware updates - you can't record audio or connect to a DAW via USB like you can with the B3, it would have been nice to have a USB cable included but at this price, I find it hard to complain. It uses a USB-Mini USB cable and they can be cheaply obtained - if you have a PlayStation 3 console, you can use the controller charging cable as I do.

The build quality is excellent for the price - sturdy thick plastic which I feel would stand up to live play. I've never had any problems with the older Zoom models and have no reason to believe the B1Xon to be any different.

The interface on the B1Xon is cut-down from the B3 with one nicely backlit and very clear screen. You have a rotary knob and Enter button for selecting and adjusting parameters, a Home button which will instantly return you to the patch screen. There is a 'D-pad' (for those familiar with gaming consoles) for easily navigating through the virtual stompboxes via the left/right buttons and pressing the up/down buttons will cycle through the available stompboxes, making it really easy to create a virtual pedalboard. Each of the virtual stompboxes are fully tweakable and the interface makes it easy to do so.

Most importantly, the sounds. Having owned the B3, I find that the sound quality on the B1Xon matches it - while there aren't as many effects on the B1Xon (although the recent 1.21 firmware added more effects!) - there hasn't been any compromise in sound. Modulation effects - chorus, flanger, phaser sound as they should, the reverbs are excellent and the delays - both analogue modelled and digital are really nice with a pleasant warble on the tape delay models. Overdrives, fuzzes and distortion are well covered and there are some really great synth sounds. I find the octave effects track better than some standalone pedals I've owned. The expression pedal works well and for most patches, is assigned to volume control for convenience.

Overall, this is an absolute bargain for what you get for the price - highly recommended!
