Amazing little amp

Svejk, 11.10.2013
Small, cool and full-featured. It packs a punch and has all of the various connectivity options you could want for practice. The different tones and effects are ideal for most styles of music.

When switched on the inside lights up as if there are glowing valves inside, which is cool. There is a tuner built-in and you can connect it to PC/Mac in order to record or use your own effects. Compatible with Steinberg Cubase software.

Almost perfect home solution

Justin Time, 07.12.2013
I added the Yamaha THR10X so I can play and record at home silently through headphones and not always have to throw the completely oversized stack. Since I have a taste for high gain amps, my choice fell very quickly on the model THR10X. To put it briefly, it is incomprehensible from my point of view, what Yamaha has thrown with the THR series for compact dreamtools on the market. They offer tremendously authentic and versatile amp sounds as well as effects, enable the recording of the audio data via USB audio in a very good quality, are highly mobile and are impressive for their size, are suitable as an audio docking station and moreover Also visually appealing and above all affordable. All this would have been unthinkable for this price in the past 10 years.

In general, I can say that I am very close to the dream sound with the THR10X and should be completely satisfied. Unfortunately, the image becomes cloudy when you look at the other variants of desktop amplifiers and consider the concept of the THR line in its entirety. Here, the potential of the individual representatives of the THR series, which in my opinion (consciously conscious for economic reasons ?!), is revealed.

My "problem" looks as follows: I love the channel Brown II in combination with the Cabinet Brown4x12 of the THR10X. But I am also thrilled with the upturned clean and crunch channel of the THR10 via the American2x12 cabinet. Unfortunately, the high gain amps of the THR10 do not hit me as well as the channel Brown II of the THR10X and my priority is now primarily with the high gain sounds. However, I would not want to do without these excellent crunch sounds, but I would have liked to set me on a single THR representative.

To be completely satisfied, I would have to buy the THR10X because of Brown II including Brown Cab as well as the THR10 for clean and crunch and the additional cabinets. Most likely, however, the THR10C also offers an amp cabinet combination that I would really like. Unfortunately, I am not willing to pay each time 300 ¤ only for the one or two additional amp simulations per THR model, which I would really use of it. I prefer also for space reasons an all-in-one solution.

Surely, Yamaha's underlying concept is that variants A, C and X are designed for different styles of music and instruments, and that the basic model is virtually the all-rounder. In my opinion, one would have been much more customer-friendly, if all the amps and cabinets had been combined in a single model and in addition, a function-reduced and cheaper version (comparable to the THR5) would be offered - also for different musical orientations.

So I would like an additional top model of the Yamaha THR line, which includes all amp models including the cabinets of the THR10, THR5A, THR10X and THR10C. The built-in hardware is presumably identical in the different versions and a device with presets and cabinets of all THR representatives, which can be offered also at a higher price, represents in my opinion no technical hurdle. With an all-encompassing THR- Line6 and Boss could make a sweat.

Finally, I would like to emphasize once more that, with the exception of a few small exceptions, I am thrilled by the THR10X and its possibilities, even if the reason for the review might be different. The full potential of Virtual Circuit Modeling, however, has not yet been fully exploited in my view in favor of higher profits or previously unknown marketing strategies.

Per:
- Very good sound via headphones and USB-out, which otherwise would only be realized by means of a sophisticated microphone pick-up of a real amp at a very high volume
- Sound characteristics of the guitars used are completely preserved (tested with Fender American Standard Stratocaster, Gibson Les Paul BFG, Schecter Jeff Loomis 7-String)
- authentic behavior of the master section (simulated end stage compression) allows additional sound coloration
- very high quality of (stereo) effects
- extremely versatile tool for (silent) homerecording in very good quality via USB audio (max. 24 bit / 44 kHz)
- Parallel recording of the DI signal possible (Re-paging capability)
- With the help of the software editor, very detailed additional settings are required (cabinet change, compressor, noise gate, exact effect parameters)
- Considering the size: remarkable sound volume of integrated full-range speakers
- Docking station capability
It is much more common than before
- Trouble-free drivers

Cons:
- Product policy of deliberately restricted models is very questionable
- Number of storage spaces (5) quickly exhausted
- Presets are changed with a clearly audible delay
- Controller labeling on top in the half-dark very difficult to read
- Editor changes require two separate memory operations: for individual presets and for the entire library
- integrated LED lighting much darker than the THR10
