A quality instrument

Eamon C., 03.01.2015
I bought an APX500 over 5 years ago and I love it. Great sound and you can feel the Quality when you play. Lovely action on the strings/fretboard.
The pick ups and controls always give me the sound I want. The body is slightly thinner than your average full size acoustic but I prefer it. I've just purchased another one for a teenage student who hasn't put it down yet. Also it looks great. I highly recommend it.

Cheap Western guitar with good pickup sound

Christian v.d.L., 12.10.2013
After I played a really very cheap Western guitar with pickup for several years in the band (60, 70s cover), a replacement was needed after its defect (bridge solved).

Since the main instrument for me continues to be the electric guitar, I was looking for a rather cheap solution and decided on reviews on the Thomann site for the Yamaha APX500II.

The guitar came safely packed with me. First surprise: the workpieces are useful; Often my first step in new guitars is the new line. On the other hand - if I have felt it right and measured - quite thin strings, I would mean a 011 to 052er bronze set.

The first thing to check the guitar was whether it had survived the transport safely: Except for minimal scratches and a small "dong", which were only detectable with a meticulous view, everything was perfect. Scratches will surely come to this, which is no problem. At no point did I see a real problem at first sight.

The top coat seems very thin, the grain of the spruce top is clearly visible. I personally find good. The overall processing is good. In particular, the neck including the fretboard and frets have no burrs, the bundles are neatly processed and the frets themselves surprisingly cleanly polished. The crem colored binding is also processed clean. Also, there are no paint defects.

If there is anything to complain about, then it is the glued ornamental rosette around the sound hole. This is a bit modest. But here, too, you have to take a meticulous look. But you can see that, for example, the soundhole under the rosette has become a little loveless "gefinished". The guitar is equipped with two belt buttons, the rear is also the jack plug of the pickup, just like you are accustomed to Yamaha Western guitars.

To playability: The guitar comes as I said with a 011-052 string set. The string position is pleasantly low tuned and the playability thereby very good. The neck is almost straight and not painted, by the way, that feels really good. No strings can be found. As a result of the narrower neck of the guitar, the electric guitar will soon feel comfortable.

The acoustic sound: Due to the narrow body with little volume you can not expect the full sound of a Dreadnaught or Jumbo size here. Nevertheless, the purely acoustic play on the APX500II makes fun. The guitar speaks well to different playing techniques, has a slightly percussive attack and pleasantly good sustain. Only in the bass range is missing - because of the size - a little volume.

Now, however, the real field of use of the guitar: the game amplified by pickup and preamp. To do so, first insert the two supplied AA batteries into the battery holder inserted into the upper frame. This is solved very comfortably, although I am surprised that here is not a 9 Volt block is used.

The preamp, also integrated in the upper frame, is equipped with a volume control, 3-band EQ, which is parametrically designed in the middle by a further slide control and a tuning function. So there is little to report. The built-in chromatic tuner works very well indeed. It recognizes the sound quickly, shows the deviation via two arrows and really makes a fast tuning: No struggling LED chains or annoying jumping of the detected sounds: Class! An LED indicates when the battery becomes low.

With the EQ, the sound can be adjusted quickly, but I did not need much correction. Even in the neutral position, the tone on the PA is already very well balanced. Here, the basses are now well represented. The heights are concise but not "british". All in all, it is noticeable that the pickup has actually succeeded in capturing some of the acoustic sound. Since I was surprised, as my previous guitar but rather the classic Piezo sound reproduced. In the band context, however, these are often nuances, which are subject to.

Overall rating: For the price you get a really good playable and amplified excellent sounding guitar. Even the purely acoustic play is still fun, but the sound is clearly restricted.

All around 5 points with the exception of processing. Although this is also at a high level in terms of guitar setup and playability, but leaves a very little detail. To differentiate therefore therefore here a point deduction.

Value for money: Outstanding!

(PS: At the PA it was now shown that the low E string is not amplified correctly.) After checking the seat of the bridge, I assume a rather rare defect of the pickup.
