Metal sounds for budget prices!
John408, 11.10.2013
This is a sample library for the metallers out there and it sure doesn't disappoint! Compatible with either Toontracks EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer line of products, it expands the default libraries with more sonic options, obviously, aimed at the metal and heavy rock producers among us.

Note: This is not a standalone product, it requires EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer to work (both of which are fantastic products in their own right!)

Handling:
Not sure what is meant by "handling" with a software product, but the packaging is of good quality and it comes on a dedicated DVD. Installation is a breeze, just make sure you have an optical disk drive available as a lot of modern laptops are now omitting this option.

Features:
This doesnt have any standalone features per-say, as it requires and uses the features of either EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer to work. But both of these softwares have fantastic editing features that allow any mixer/recorder/artist/producer to get into the composition of the sound and to tweak and alter them to their own tastes. I've also connected a MIDI drumkit to my interface and triggered these samples, and while that takes a bit of know-how, it is easy to do with tons of tutorials on the web.

Sound/Quality:
For these type of products, this is the big one, and this sample pack does not disappoint! It is aimed squarely at the metal/heavy rock genres and gives you that modern metal drum sound. Dont let "purists" put you off with sayings like "if its not real drums its fake!". Those people are very naiieve as 99% of modern metal is either sample "enhanced" or sample "replaced" anyways. Capture the human performance with an electronic kit or triggers, use this sample library and - BOOM! - 90% of your metal drums done! Some tweaking and eqing here and there and you have your modern metal sound setup, perfect for your song, and done in very quick time....AND without having to worry about phasing issues too!
It doesn't have quite the same flexibility of sounds as with Toontracks "The Metal Foundry", but then again, its far cheaper and still capable of achieving good metal sounds.
5/5 in this category, easy!

Computer Utilisation:
4/5 on this one. As mentioned, it requires other software to work, and it does have a relatively considerable hit on your CPU. To be fair, most modern Core i5 and i7 (since Sandy Bridge era) are like NASA so you wont have any issue running this. I just would perhaps consider your rig if you're trying to replicate a massive drum opus using 537 iterations of EZ Drummer or Superior Drummer with this sample library! But for everyone else here back on planet earth, you will be grand!
Also, if your laptop/mac doesn't have an optical drive slot, you'll need to use an external one to install this. Its easy to do, but its easy to forget this critical reminder! :)

Total / Summary:
This sample pack sounds great and really gives the heavy producer a great library of metal sounds to choose from. Those into their folk, pop, electronic and r'n'b may want to look elsewhere (and learn to appreciate metal music in the meantime! :) ) but those after that modern metal sounds will be well catered.
Well worth it, especially if you're on a budget.

Being "metal machined" :)
rubbl, 21.02.2014
First I have to say, I did use the EZ Drummer without add on before. But as I startet my first metal production with drum programmings, I decided to buy the Metal Machine EZX. It sounds more natural as the well known DFH and I also liked the bubinga Tama Drums in real.
After using it for over a year, I can tell everbody, that it is easy to use. You can also resort on to the MIDI Files to start a new Song. I prefered to program new tracks in the MIDI map of my DAW (Cubase). The Sound fits well in a metal mix as they are. The real deal is to compress and eq it as you would do with your own recorded drums.
The Metal Machine is perfect miced, gated. Now it is your turn to produce your "metal machined" monster recording!
