Better spend some more money
I also wanted to start with bagpipes. After a short research, I realized that it would only start with the practice chanter (PC). So I looked up and found several at Thomann. So also immediately one ordered and released with much joy and motivation. Well the first result was very disappointing. The PC creaked and squeaked not very pleasantly. Well, I thought, this is certainly due to my inexperienced way of playing.
After some exercises came also better tones, but trot alledem the PC did not sound good. Now I have found a teacher where I got the necessary know how. With him, I could also admire the other models of thomann, which exist. Result: Similar bad, even the expensive Blackwood variant.
And that is the problem: High quality bagpipes accessories should only be bought by experts. This is not an attack on the previous quality of Thomann, but against the experience of, for example, McCullum, which has been hand-picked for years, is not easy.
Here again briefly my summary: - The PC is parsing and squeaking. At first this has something to do with the wrong way of playing, but even after several months it is still so. Even my teacher had problems to get a clearly articulated tone.
-The wood is not very high-quality, especially at the connecting element it wiggles fast. -The holes are unclean bored and (and that's really not in order) they are not in a line but act as if they were simply drilled so times. And that's one thing I even expect from a beginner model! Think of a recorder, whose holes are not in a line)
That's why: Give more 20 euros more for a high-quality chanter, because if you really stay, then you will get one such. The motivation and the pleasure of hearing are even more enhanced.
And little tip still: Look for a teacher. McEge's textbook is quite good, but only with a teacher can you show audible successes. The textbook does not tell you when you play crossing notes, the teacher already.
