Very nice Ukulele

MojiT0, 14.05.2017
The real story is that I received as gift from Thomann the more expensive Deluxe model https://[LINK] (379 EU) for the price of this model (129 EU) !!! Thank you Thomann for the precious gift !!! The review is for the more expensive Ukulele I received. So I can only place the review here but I think the sound and quality should be comparable (they both are from the same factory in Portugal). So for the instrument itself - it is the nicest instrument I have (and I have a lot). Everything is perfect, the look, the sound, comfortable to play, the tuning keys are fluent to use. The wood has its properties and produces rich and sweet sound (it's Acacia). The only thing that was shame for the producer was the saddle - it was plastic. And not only this but it seems it was shaped mistakenly and put in reverse. This of course is very small detail that I fixed temporarily until my bone saddle blanc arrives :) Thank you Thomann again to offering high quality bone saddle and nut blancs (check https://[LINK] So temporarily I just corrected the plastic saddle filing it and I put cheap back nylon ukulele strings to try until the bone saddle arrives. From the filing of the original saddle the size went to 7mm and the action is pretty low but without fret buzz. The play is excellent. So this beautiful sound is with the cheap plastic saddle and the cheapest strings there !!! I cannot wait to make the bone one and to put my Aquila strings I prepared :) And you have to know that this Ukulele is made in Portugal and is Thomann re-branded Antonio Pinto Carvalho (APC). Thank you again for the beautiful gift !!! Superior Ukulele.

Wood promised a lot - processing did not hold it ...

05.12.2016
Anyone who has done the espionage homework knows that this ukulele was originally built in Portugal by the Portuguese company Antonio Pinto Calvalho, or APC for short.
This is known at the latest, after you see that on the head of the ukulele the impressions of the APC logo are to be recognized, which was probably on it or was still on it.

Further, the person will know that only genuine Hawaiian acacia wood, which is growing exclusively in Hawaii as an endemic species, may actually be called "Koa". This Ukulele, however - as you can read from the APC website - is from "European Koa" ... One clears at this point and points out that it is simply acacia.

But as is known, acacia is an absolute fantastic tonewood, as it grows very slowly and robustly and increases the resonance by the stability because the vibrations in the sound body are not absorbed.

After all this is said, the positive is the whole history:

APC is a great manufacturer, who sells well and gladly just about our beloved Thomann Versandhaus. And - Koa back and forth - a full-massive acacia ukulele you look for the price at Kala and Co. in vain.

Why in vain? The reason is obvious: because the processing of the instrument unfortunately does not hold what the wonderfully elegant and visually appealing sound wood promises.

The ribbed wooden lining in the interior is partly broken - and can be clearly seen by the sound hole - and inserted afterwards. The entire top of the blanket has noticeable spiral grinding or other processing traces that make the ukulele appear as if one had said in the middle of the woodwork: "Come, lunch break ..." and then forget the last steps. The Outer Binding looks pretty with the typical portuguese pattern, but is partially decorated with quilts.
And the bridge is equipped with the clever APC-typical string-through-the-ceiling-plug design (the string is pulled once through the ceiling to the sound hole, a knot is made and the string is pulled tight, then once around the bridge And then pulled to the head and taut), but if you do not make the knot on the A and E string large enough (at least four times the knot), you soon find that the wood from which the bridge was made is simply too soft And much too much to give ... that you notice at the latest when, when tuning the new strings, the wood at the node finally gives way and the hole is so big that the knot passes through and the string suddenly and without warning - SNAP - like A whip flies around the ears ...
"... It could have been in the eye ..."

But praise where praise is due - it sounds great. Great? Yes fantastic even. For real!
Whether with re-entrant or low-G - no matter, the sound echoes and the whole ukulele vibrates and spreads warm vibes ... really, it vibrates and sounds long after.
A space-filling sound, which is absolutely impressive.
Chords, plucked, country, folk, blues - no matter what you play - the sound convinces and takes hold.

And - yes, of course, it makes something visually real. The acacia is pleasant to the touch with a great satin finish and does not dampen by the absence of a thicker gloss finish - the depths and centers are fantastic and dominate with this hardwood, which promotes the soft and warm, gentle depth-emphasized sounds. The heights - which apart from the tenor size always prevail - are rather in the background, but can be worked out.

The mechanics look really nice. Probably, the mechanics on the (only) second neck and the grain next to the sound are the plus points on the Uke.

The chords can be grasped perfectly despite a narrower neck and the game is completely ok. However, the fingerboard makes a somewhat sad-dry impression.

Does the APC perhaps not under the name APC because it is - with the small processing deficiencies - rather B-commodity? The question was once put into the virtual space.

All in all - whoever does not care about smaller optical and processing crochets, has the acoustically priced at the price the right bargain.
As I said: full-solid wood acacia!
