Thomann Classic 3/4 size

Jeffrey B., 16.05.2013
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my grandson - aged 8. He loves it and is getting on well with his guitar lessons - though I will have to tell my daughter to change the teacher as he can't read music. Overall the fit is just right for him and his hands. For the price the overall package was excellent value for money. The sound is obviously not world class but more than good enough for a learner. I would recommend it for any budding 8 - 10 year old guitarist. Delivery no problem.

Good beginner instrument

Rudolf Georg, 18.11.2009
In a household with 13 guitars it is, of course, only a matter of time until the youngest first shows interest.

Of course she had already got access to my guitars (except for a few expensive exceptions, since only under supervision). At this age (8 years) however the interests change almost hourly and of course grown guitars are simply too big and too heavy. Does the child remain? Should you invest? The understandable desire of the father to transfer the hobby to the child plays a role (and you can also buy a guitar again without the budget of the household objections ;-)

So the instrument should be the right size, the tonal quality should not offend the sensitive and spoiled ears of the guitar-mad father. In addition, the string position and the general playability of the instrument must take into account the physical conditions of the child. Well ... and the price should remain in the appropriate (experimental) framework.

The range of guitars is now extraordinarily large and actually manageable nevertheless, thanks to the new media. However, in contrast to standards, such as a Fender Stratocaster or in this case another well-known brand, the Exotics (3/4, 1/2 concert) is quite a lot of waste in the market. So I decided to get the housemark of my preferred shipping company Thomann. Whether the price was my expectation was not too high. I have seen so many bad, even defective specimens at cheap concert guitars. Thomann-like, the order arrived the following day; Well packaged as always.

A first glance shows a fairly proper processing. The first thing to check the strings. For a concert very shallow and snar-free - for this a 1! The bridge still leaves enough space to flip it if necessary, the ceiling should lift over the years. The bridge itself is made of plastic. The neck is apparently made of maple and even shows Flames! The cervical foot is attached, otherwise one-part. The corpus begins at the 12th covenant. The fingerboard is made of beech and is darkened - whether the color remains, the time will show.
The ceiling is made of laminated spruce, the body according to beech, walnut color. The soundhole rosette is overpainted and not simply sticky like on other cheap instruments - Pluspunkt! The guitar is of course made of laminated wood, absolutely ok in this price class. The high-gloss finish is flawless. Unusual material mix for a concert - but we will see and hear! The mechanisms are standards but provide their service exceptionally well. The guitar has no belt pin on the lower sides, so should be played by the child exclusively in the sitting - sorry Kids, posen comes later ;-)
The frets are properly dressed and polished and show almost no sharp edges. In contrast to the electric, this fact would be negligible, since the fingerboard of a classic is broader and flatter. The grip on a classical guitar is a bit different from that of a Western or electric guitar. However, especially with a beginner's instrument should be paid attention - it is not always "school-like" played.

Playability: Impossible due to the string position and the somewhat smaller dimensions. Since I practice together with my daughter, the guitar is normalized to E in standard tuning. This also has the advantage that the string tension is slightly lower; This is very much to the young player. The guitar is bundrein up to the higher positions. Due to the construction, chords from the 10th Bund can only be used very hard. This is not the case with the "big".

Sound: so, hat off! I expected a much more powerful sound. Here everything is in the green area. Obviously, I have to take back the volume during the common practice, but the volume of the instrument is absolutely sufficient. Accord accompaniment at the good night song for the child (Hells Bells ... ;-) is absolutely possible. Even I take this small handy guitar very, very gladly at hand.

Conclusion: I only had one of these copies in my hand and that is good! I've described what to look for, just when you're not so familiar with the subject matter. Therefore check if the package arrives. Total beginners should take advantage of Thomann's good service and get their advice; It does not cost anything and keeps you from buying.
This guitar is very suitable for small beginners and can also make the daddy fun. Very good value for money!
