Very good for this price!

Joachim239, 09.06.2011
Hello dear readers, I have been dealing with the power amplifier technology and its repair for more than 20 years. So I would like - so to speak from a professional point of view - to evaluate this power amplifier. I needed several audio channels with medium power for a variable sound (fixed installation). So the choice fell to 3 pieces E400. As always, shipped. After unpacking, I was positively surprised. The overall impression was good. The device looks simple but good, the case is neatly screwed and stable. The output stage plays in good quality and makes for the price also in performance a good figure. The processing inside is neat and tidy. A ring core transformer is installed in the power supply and a metal bridge rectifier. The capacity of the power supply units is somewhat short of 2 x 10,000uF. More capacity at higher levels would make the output stage somewhat more impulsive. But when I am honest, I was not negatively surprised because you always have to keep in mind the price / performance ratio. But what really smelled a smile in my face was the fact that here original Toshiba end stage transistors are installed; I have seen this quite different in this price class. Really the thumbs up.

If now someone asks the question, why I dismount brand new power amps, then I can not - in my opinion - a genuine lack not let unnamed: The fan. Immediately after switching on, it runs on full throttle .... and that is unmistakable. So loud is certainly not exaggerated talked .... Thus the device is not for Proberaume or for at home not to be used. It is completely incomprehensible to me why a temperature control - albeit simple - was dispensed with. These I have now retrofitted. The fan now runs very slowly in front of itself and is thus almost not audible. At 50 ° C heat sink temperature it starts. This condition is only reached when you make a little noise with the power amplifier and then the fan is just no longer audible. Other retrofitters are said that a complete shutdown of the fan is not recommended, since the heat sink has no reserves. A forced ventilation, though a small one, must always take place! At high volumes, the fan must be set to max. Speed. For me now by temperature regulation. My component expenditure was about 5 euros.

Something "unusual" is the fact that the air is sucked from above into the device and is mainly blown out laterally. There should never be placed a device on the amplifier, which has almost no feet. However, the stacking of several E400 or similar devices is not a problem because the feet are high enough. For rack mounting, the rear door should remain open during operation.

Conclusion: A really good amplifier for this price, but with too loud fan. I will certainly re-block them.

I ask for leniency for the partly very technical execution.

Does what it should, very sturdy walking use

Michael87, 04.11.2009

Ansonsten verrichtet die E400 ihren Dienst ohne Probleme, technisch konnte ich nichts negatives feststellen." data-mt-lang="en-x-mtfrom-de" data-translated="I bought the power amplifier for small monitors, because it fits with its small insertion depth also in a smaller rack. This could lead to problems with the heat removal of many devices in the rack. Otherwise the E400 does their service without problems, technically I could not find anything negative." > I bought the power amplifier for small monitors, because it fits with its small insertion depth also in a smaller rack.
