Nice & simple multi-effect with great sounds
29.04.2016
Having searched for years for a multi-effect pedal that will do exactly what I need and no more, the Fly Rig seems to be my Holy Grail!

I've spent years fiddling with digital multi-effects and amp sims - Line 6, Zoom, Vox, Boss, etc. My gripe with all of them is too many functions, multiple menus, and that slight 'digital sound' you get.

Playing in a ska band that gigs on a regular basis I needed something that will give me a range of clean and crunchy sounds, some reverb, and delay. The boost/hot function for solos is an added bonus.

Having had a good play (I'll be using it for it's first gig tonight) the Fly Rig ticks all the boxes. The sounds I can get out of it are spot on, but there aren't hundreds of pointless presets - who uses most of those? The fact there are no digital readouts gladdens my heart!

Pros - sturdy build, all-in-one construction, stompbox switches, versatile sounds (but not too many options), decent power supply, low-noise (none at low gain settings), colour coded lights in the knobs for each section, tap function the delay.

Cons - no on/off switch, the unit switches on with all pedals armed, no XLR/balanced out, reverb only works with SansAmp section, knobs are tiny (my pretty normal size fingers have trouble gripping them ), and it only comes with 4 silicon knob grippers, when it should have them on each knob.

Bonus Tip: save yourself £7 (the extra cost of 10 tiny silicon knob grippers) by making your own from 5mm internal diameter silicon tubing. This is about £1.50 per metre on Ebay.

It does what it is supposed to do

I bought the FR5 to see if I could use it with both my electric and acoustic guitar rigs. I have it on a pedal board with chorus, compressor, tremolo, and tuner pedals- in other words, the things that the FR5 does not have and I need.

My electric amp is a Fender Deluxe Reverb. My acoustic amp is a Fishman Loudbox Artist. With the Fender I feed the output of the FR5 (as the last component in the signal chain) into the Input jack, old-school. It works great.

With the Fishman I run the pedals through the FX loop, and feed just my clean guitar signal to the Input of the amp. This also works great.

Of course, you have to play around with the knobs, especially the various Level and Drive settings to get exactly the sound you want for each environment. But I was amazed how far I could take the sound of an acoustic guitar with the FR5. By the way, I tried exactly the same thing with my Digitech RP1000, and believe me it does NOT sound good with an acoustic guitar.

So for me the FR5 is an excellent and very compact solution- I only have one pedal board whether I am playing an acoustic or an electric gig.

I also did try out feeding the FR5 directly into the mixer at a rehearsal, and it worked well enough. That's just not how I plan to use it, except in emergency.

I had a pedalboard that was getting so crowded, not to mention the hassle of figuring out which patch cable was not working during the soundcheck, I really needed to find a better solution. The FR5 was it.

The ONLY criticism I have is what somebody else mentioned- the Reverb is only available if you have the Sans Amp turned on. That makes no sense to me, but I have it on all the time anyway (have to, if I want Reverb!). A minor complaint, but would have been nice to have a separate Reverb. A Tuner would have been nice too, but I have a TC Electronic Polytune, so I probably would have stuck with that anyway.

Bottom line: FR5: Highly recommended.
