Unique top quality instrument

Malcolm M., 27.04.2015
I bought this for a specific job, but have now been using it for a couple years. This bass has proved to be hugely popular with many types of bands, both because of its convincing double bass sound and great looks. I quickly gave up using it on the spike, but it works perfectly on the strap in normal guitar position.
Only minor problem has been feedback in some situations, but manageable with either use of the tone control or amp position.

TB 10 - A new category

UweA, 18.10.2009
Experience report Takamine TB 10

Have the splendid piece for 2 weeks
I give a detailed report, as I am very convinced of this instrument.

1) Processing and design:

Top and noble, in my view no improvement possible. This bass is made in Japan.

2) Construction and dimensions:

The TB 10 unites well-known design principles in an unusual way. The ceiling is a beautifully shaped archtop, supported by 2 (!) Bass bars. There is no definite information whether massive or not. My opinion is plywood. A vocal cymbals would reinforce the constructive proximity to the contrabass, but it does not exist.
The neck has a deep D-shaped cross-section with a clear roundness of the handleboard, corresponding to a slim 1/2 contrabass. A double bass is also a longitudinal "hollow" of the super cleanly directed handleboard, which has its maximum approximately at the 5th - 7th "fret". As far as I know the neck a steel reinforcement, which is then again "conventional". The neck is about the 15th "waist", the length is 86 cm. The floor is also rounded according to the ceiling and nestles very "comfortable".
Weight slightly over 4 Kg, length 126 cm, body 44 x 54 cm. Thickness front ca 10.5 cm, rear ca 13.5 cm. Neck width 4.8 cm / 6.7 cm. The suitcase is wg the thick padding again significantly larger - model children's rack with genuine wrong croco. Taste, but comes noble.

3) Setting, handling and playability:

The wooden "hold down" brackets of the strings were adjusted to my taste too tight, I have reduced this to very little pressure, in my opinion the bass sounds so better (miniature Allen key not enclosed).
It is fortunately now a bolt, which fits into the receiver for the mandrel and serves as a belt support. I have an additional brass washer, so that he has no chance to slip. Unfortunately, a hole for the Straplock pin had to be made at the neck.
Playing in upright position works very well, the bar is very stable. A little bit is missing here the size of the KB corpus, which is however only for diehard KB players a disadvantage. It is not possible to remove the TB 10.
Playing while standing with a bass strap is "easy" and easy. The bass weighs
A little over 4 kg, which weighs mainly on the left shoulder. The belt should be at least 8 inches wide, then it is comfortable.
The playability is a "breath" heavier than on my previous acoustic bass
This is no wonder, however, there are relatively thick strings (49/61/87/108 lt Takamine website, corresponding to Daddario ECB 82 Chromes). Other strings I have not yet tested. You can get used to the rounding of the handleboard quickly, for a few weeks small markings on the half side are useful. Bottom line, I would say that the playability is slightly lighter than with 1/2 double bass, nice one without "thumbs" as with the KB - and somewhat heavier than with a conventional acoustic bass, for me personally but very pleasant.

4) Sound unreinforced

Acoustically clearer than my old acoustic bass, quite with KB characteristics, but of course not so voluminous. You can feel a very pleasant vibration of the body during the game - I have not experienced so before. For an acoustic session it is also unlugged.
(Small room, no more than 2 guitarists) Very nice singing sustain, probably less than with an E-Fretless, but more than a KB usual.

5) Sound amplified

WOW !! I love this sound!
Very full, full and a bit snarling, with the tube preamp covered with glory.
The pressure in the depths is enormous and makes other acoustic basses sound more like a guitar.
I like the amplified sound as much as an enhanced KB. The tube is by the way an Electro Harmonix 12 AU 7 (identical ECC 82), since the mounted tube had small misfires, I exchanged them for a TAD ECC 82. The TAD may sound a bit better (and was replaced by Thomann free of charge). Tip: a spare tube (just 13 EUR) in the suitcase, even if you should drag a few years useless - without tube, the preamp says almost nothing, and "just" to get the part is certainly not.

Please do not compare the extraordinary sound with a KB and then discover any "deficits", that is mischief. The sound reminds you of a KB, but has its own nuances. It is, so to speak, the best acoustic bass sound I've ever heard. Interestingly, there are professionals who have replaced their KB part by a TB 10 (bassist of Deborah Carter / look at U Tube). My amplifier is by the way a Phil Jones BG, which fits prima.

6) Value for money

Au I have hesitated for a long time but do not regret a single euro. The price is an instrument in top processing with my personal dream sound.

7) Conclusion

The Takamine TB 10 is a self-sufficient instrument that simply does not respect constructive boundaries and previous sound limits, a new category. Nothing for purists and extremists of one camp or another, but ingenious for some unconventional bassists who are looking for this very acoustic sound and are musically versatile oriented.
