Short review from a music producer.

21.08.2016
I'm using the Subpac m2 for music production rather than general music listening. I think that it's fun for general music listening but where it really shines, is using it for music production.

How powerful is the bass?
I generally use the Subpac at about 40-45% intensity and this is enough to feel like someone is giving you a good solid thump in the back :) There is actually a speaker in it which plays the music rather than something that just vibrates when a kick or bass sounds, this was something which I was not 100% clear to me when looking into the product.

Pros.
I find it really helps with the tuning of kick drums and more importantly adjusting the decay times of your kick and bass. You can really tighten these up with the Subpac as you can feel the more minute adjustments so you can get them pretty much bang on. By getting such a tight cohesion between the two you can remove just that little bit more muddyness within your mix which will give the rest of the elements a little more room to breath and will help you get closer to that clinical sound that you are looking for.

It is also a great aid when it comes to EQing, you can tell straight away if something needs a low cut whether it's a synth pad or maybe something a little less obvious like a hi hat sample that has a little too much low end information. This makes finding that sweet spot for cutting a notch in your kick and bass so the two can punch through a much less laborious task and you will be confident with your selection.

Other things to note.

This isn't a silent product, if someone is in the same room as you they will be able to hear the Subpac unless it is being used at moderate levels.

You should check whether this device is powerful enough to power your headphones there is a list online of recommended headphones. The M2 is rated for headphones rated from 32 ohms and below.

Lastly when using the Subpac wirelessly there's some noise evident, it's not that noticeable when music is playing but you can definitely hear it during quieter points in the track, this does not exist though when connecting through the line in.

Would I buy this product again?
Yes I would, it takes a bit of getting used to at first but once you get used to it and you forget that you are wearing it, it becomes quite immersive. Unfortunately this is just one of those products that no amount of reading reviews will help you, you just have to take the chance an try one for yourself.

Several upgrades over the innitial M2

03.11.2016
Later edit (November 2016): It would be unfair of me not to add this to the review after the following. The Customer Support at Subpac were kind, after contacting them on Facebook to ship me from US a new Subpac M2 (quite fast, 10 days or so). They addressed the quality of the chest straps, now is proper textile which is basically impossible to break. They also added a second elastic strap over the abdomen for extra stability and it definitely improves the contact with the body regardless the body position. The noise seems to be fixed - there is a noticeable white noise but the previous version had a sort of "hum".
Conclusion 2: At this moment the unit has been upgraded to a level that makes me recommend the product again. The quality of the transducers in this version remains to be seen.

Use: Only at home, when checking the subsonics of project in progress or listening music.

Pros: Very good idea for checking subsonics.

Cons: The realisation of the product lacks in many departments, see below.

For starters, there is a constant noise in the headphones - the producer argues that it only happens when the impedance is too low, but 90% of the headphones on the market are 32 Ohms, what they expected? Probably a separating transformer would solve the problem with both noise and impedances but it would cost few dollars more.

Getting on with the straps: The strap mechanism is totally unergonomic. Two straps, one over chest and one over abdomen would make sense, as these are the points that must stay in contact with the body. Currently one can get either the top side either the lower side, but hardly both. The manufacturer used a very cheap material on the upper straps, the kind of faux leather which broke at the stitchings in a little over 6 months rendering the top strap unuseable.

Transducers: After 10 months they rattle instead of just rumbling as they supposed to. It's extremely annoying. I can go around 25% level before the rattle starts and my back sounds like a loose subwoofer.

Conclusion: I like the idea but the execution is simply terrible especially given the retail price. I would not recommend this product to anyone. Hopefully there will be more competition on this segment so we can see some degree of improvement.
